NEW YORK (WBZ) ― A crafty Red Sox fan working construction on the new Yankee Stadium has tried his best to sabotage future seasons for the team from New York. The die hard member of Red Sox Nation reportedly buried a Red Sox jersey under the visiting team's clubhouse. At least that's the story being told to the New York Post.

According to two construction workers who spilled the beans to the Post, the deceitful feat happened back in August, while concrete was being poured for the clubhouse floor. Now those workers fear they witnessed a curse being cast on their Yankees.

The Yankees' take on the story? They're calling it all a scam. In a statement released Friday the team said, "We noticed that the NY Post wrote a fun and interesting story about a t-shirt today - but it never happened. Yankee fans know that burying something in concrete in the basement is never a good thing. Memo to the Post: You're 10 days late for April Fool's Day."

So who's telling the truth? You be the judge.

Yankee Stadium certainly wouldn't be the first 'cursed' stadium in baseball.

Wrigley Field in Chicago has the curse of the Billy goat, a hex placed on the team by a fan who wasn't allowed to bring his pet goat to a game.

In Tampa, the team's new stadium was built partially over a cemetery.

Yankees Unearth Red Sox Jersey From New Stadium

NEW YORK (AP) ― So much for the curse. The New York Yankees have ended a construction worker's attempt to jinx their new stadium with a buried Boston Red Sox jersey.

Team officials watched Sunday as construction workers removed the jersey, with slugger David Ortiz's name on it, from 2 feet of concrete in a service corridor of the stadium that's under construction.

The team says a construction worker -- who is a Red Sox fan -- recently buried the jersey there while on the job. Two other supervisors found the tattered shirt Saturday.

The Yankees plan to donate the jersey to charity, and may pursue a lawsuit against the construction worker.

Can't keep your mouth shut, huh construction worker?

Just how many Yankee shirts found there way to the Big Dig? Now that has Yankee shit all over it!

What douches.

Posted by: TopCop24

I love the way Hal denied it to the end, but now that its true they dig it up and he's contemplating charges. It was an Ortiz jersey so maybe Hal should keep it buried with the start he's had.

What charges could they bring anyway? Littering?

Posted by: kttref

They want to civilly sue the guy.

Posted by: KozmoKramer

OK, I'll bite. For what??? Intent to inflict a curse? Would that be Cursery?
To sue civilly don't they have to prove it caused harm? This will go nowhere. (Unless of course they get the dreaded Judge Mickey Maris Dimaggio.)

It will probably go no where...BUT if the Steinbrenner's want to waste money...let 'em.

$83,000 Bid For Sox Jersey

Auction To Benefit Jimmy Fund

BOSTON -- More than 225 bids have been made in the eBay auction for the now-famous David Ortiz replica Red Sox jersey that was chipped from beneath two feet of cement in the new Yankee Stadium.

As of 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, the highest bid was $83,000. The auction will benefit the Jimmy Fund, which supports adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

The auction ends on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

The jersey was placed in wet cement during the construction of the new stadium by a construction worker and an ardent Red Sox fan who hoped to curse the Yankees. The Yankees learned about the shirt, dug it up and donated it to the Jimmy Fund.

The highest bidder, in addition to winning the jersey, will attend a 2008 Red Sox home game with a guest and be presented with the jersey at that time -- date to be determined. The highest bidder also will receive a new, authentic David Ortiz Boston Red road jersey and a New York Yankees Universe size XL T-shirt.

"The bidding on the jersey has been absolutely phenomenal, and it speaks volumes about the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox and their fans' passions for their teams and their commitment to furthering cancer care and research," said Mike Andrews, chairman of the Jimmy Fund and former Red Sox second baseman. "When it comes to cancer, we're all on the same team."

Mendon Car Dealer Buys Ortiz Jersey For $175,100

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A car dealer from Mendon won the online auction of the tattered David Ortiz jersey that was buried in the new Yankee Stadium.

Kevin Meehan's winning bid was $175,100. "I actually thought it was going to sell for more money," said Meehan, who bid only in the final moments of the weeklong eBay auction that ended at 12:30 p.m. "I have three young boys that I take to the games and they would have killed me if I didn't buy the shirt."

Meehan told WBZ he plants to put the shirt in his new dealership, Imperial Ford in Mendon.

He also gets a new Ortiz jersey, a New York Yankees Universe T-shirt and two tickets to a Red Sox game this season.

The auction began last Thursday on eBay and ended at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The starting bid was $500. There were 282 total bids.

All proceeds will go to the Jimmy Fund, the children's cancer charity affiliated with Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Mike Andrews, The Jimmy Fund chairman and former Red Sox second baseman, said the charity was "absolutely thrilled."

"We are grateful for the generous bid, and extend our deep gratitude to the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox for coming together again in the fight against cancer," he said in a statement.

Meehan said he was eager to give to the Jimmy Fund because his father died of cancer and his stepfather has the disease.

"It's personal," he said. "It's a lot deeper than just the shirt."

Construction worker and Red Sox fan Gino Castignoli buried the shirt under two feet of cement during the construction of the new stadium hoping to curse the Yankees. When the Yankees found out about it, they dug it up earlier this month.

Yankee President Randy Levine had the shirt cleaned up and sent to the Jimmy Fund. The Yankees said it cost about $30,000 to dig up the jersey.

As for the man who buried the shirt, Castignoli tells WBZ that he is glad the jersey didn't go to a Yankee fan.
