Although it took a little longer than we had hoped, the New England Coalition of Public Safety (NECOPS) is up and running. NECOPS is a labor organization dedicated to representing law enforcement officers at private colleges and universities throughout New England.

You can learn more by visiting necops.org or feel free to send me a pm if you have any questions.

We are currently scheduling meetings with groups in Mass and NH.

All I have to say is great. Hope it works out

Not telling you how to run your association, however I think in addition to pay and bennies a top priority should be a uniform policy for weapons. Start with the state colleges then work on the private universities after showing some success.

Anyone wearing a uniform that says POLICE on it should have a duty belt consisisting of all the appropriate tools for public safety.

.
The State and Community Colleges are in the process of union severance from AFSCME before the state LRC now...It started over three years ago!
The professional organization formed is called MCLEA (not to be confused with MACLEA) and for several reasons must stay separate from the private universities and colleges.

Godspeed to this new association!

Best of luck to you and New England COPS. It's about time that some Union was started stickly Private Universities and Colleges Police Departments.

I couldn't agree more. We will do everything we can to help unarmed groups who affiliate with us to convince their administration's that it is time to change. And by the way, we welcome and appreciate your input.

Exactly right. Ideally, every single college/university law enforcement officer in Mass will belong to either MCLEA or NECOPS. We will not be competing unions because one will be for public sector groups and the other for private.

My original post here has resulted in tons of hits to the website and many inquiries and questions. I would just like to clarify for everybody that although NECOPS is a new organization on paper, those of us that are involved are very experienced in both law enforcement and labor relations.

Just wanted to report that the Boston College Police Association voted by an overwhelming margin to affiliate with the New England Coalition of Public Safety. The ballots were counted on 4/12/08 and the affiliation will take effect immediately.

We're hoping to publish some updates and information this week. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please send me a PM or use the "contact us" page of the website.

I thought it would be a good idea to update everybody on how things are going with the New England Coalition of Public Safety.

We have spoken with many, many groups via e-mail and telephone and everybody is excited and interested about NECOPS. We have heard over and over that "it's about time we got together and formed a union of our own". We couldn't agree more. The private college and university administrations meet quite often to share ideas. Most of them are members of the IACLEA (www.iaclea.org) or the MACLEA (find it via google search). They are sharing ideas and so should we!

We have already met with a couple of groups that are currently under contract with another organization, but they will likely be affiliating with NECOPS when their current contract is up.

We have also met with groups that are currently non-union. After hearing about the protections and benefits that NECOPS will provide, they have begun the process of forming a union and either affiliating or certifying with NECOPS. It is easy, and we will guide your group every step of the way.

I would encourage non-union private sector law enforcement officers to do some research. In general, union members receive higher pay and benefits than non-union members. More importantly, union members have some job security because they are under contract, and recognized by their employer or the National Labor Relations Board as a bargaining unit. In most cases, non-union employees are "employees-at-will" and can be terminated with little or no cause.

If you have been considering forming a union or changing from your current union, please contact us as soon as possible. I will try to keep people updated on this forum and at www.necops.org.

Thanks!

Thanks! Just an FYI, MACLEA is actually the Mass Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (a google search will bring you to their site). I think you meant to say:

GO MCLEA!!!!!!!

To All:

My small college police department has begun the process of becoming affiliated with the New England Coalition of Public Safety. We are surprised of how easy and painless it is starting about this process. I believe it’s great for any college/university police department looking to become involved with or not happy with their current union. Created for private sector law enforcement agencies, it truly is the best fit union for such departments. No matter the size of your department, you can’t pass up the protections this union can provide you. I highly encourage any department to visit the NECOPS website at www.necops.org and send them an email with any follow up questions. They are quick to respond and will guide you through each step of the painless process. Any further questions feel free to PM me.

Just a quick update.

We filed a petition for the Wentworth Institute of Technology Police (non-union), and the National Labor Relations Board has authorized a consent election. The election should be held in the next few weeks.

We also filed petitions for Stonehill College Police and UMass Memorial Hospital Police. There are many more to come!

Today, the National Labor Relations Board conducted a secret ballot election for the Wentworth Institute of Technology Police Department. Every officer eligible to vote, attended the election, casted their votes and in the end, the Wentworth Police Department majority voted in favor of joining the New England Coalition of Public Safety!

Congrats to New England COPS and the Wentworth Police Union!

Unfortunately it's just patrol. We would have liked to include them, but they need special recognition from the admin. Still a possiblilty, but not likely...

Congrads to the Wentworth Campus Police. Long time overdue. Be Safe.

Good for you guys....congratulations.

I understand your situation. In our case, some sgt.s have expressed some interest in joining our union but we honestly don't want them. Nothing personal (in MOST cases) but don't feel under our circumstances that it would work.

We'd LOVE to see the sgt.s unionize and over the years the subject has come up from time to time, but who the hell knows. I'm just glad I have MY union and don't seek promotion because I don't want to leave it.

Plus my days of wanting more responsibility are WAY behind me.
