A tip from California helped keep hundreds of pounds of marijuana off county streets in what the sheriff called the third-largest drug seizure of the county's new "drug interdiction unit."
Donald Simms, of Milwaukee, was arrested on March 24 when he showed up at a West Allis shipping company to pick up four pounds of the drug. The Milwaukee County Sheriff Department, upon receiving an earlier tip on the shipment from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, conducted surveillance at the shipping company and arrested Simms and two accomplices when they came to pay for and pick up the package.
Sheriff David Clarke said the four pounds of marijuana is very high grade and had a street value of more than $100,000.
A few weeks later, investigators in Los Angeles tipped local authorities to another shipment of the drug coming in from California. In that case, Marcos Lopez and Nakia Abrams were arrested after flying to Milwaukee from California with the intention of picking up the roughly 325 pounds of the drug, with an estimated value of more than $195,000, from the same West Allis shipping company.
Clarke said there is nothing to suggest that the shipping company was involved in the operations, but he said investigators continue to look into a possible connection.
"This is just the tip of the iceberg. We know that a lot more than this gets into this area. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but these efforts are obviously worth it, and (they) will continue," Clarke said.
