Boston Police Lateral Transfers

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Posted by: SgtAndySipowicz

I am well aware that Boston PD hired a bunch of LATERAL TRANSFERS last year. The only stipulation was that these Officers had to reside in Boston after being hired. Is there any possibility that BPD will do away with the ridiculous residency nonsense (before or after hire) once and for all? They would get so many more qualified candidates to apply. Some outstanding candidates just aren't willing to sell their home, move the wife and kids etc etc. I think I already know the answer, but figured I would through this out there for discussion.

This discussion has been worn out on MassCops.

Posted by: crisco88

IT WILL NEVER CHANGE!!!!!! Stick to the boondocks where you are comfortable!!!

Posted by: 7MPOC

Seven years residence, then you can move out. It was negotiated in the last contract.

Posted by: KEVDEMT

its a slim but existent possibility once mumbles get out out to pasture.

but until then, its boston jobs for boston residents

Posted by: soxrock75

I think that you will see the amount of time you have to reside in the city decrease with each contract just like the firefighters. Menino has left the door open for this by setting the initial residency cap at 7 or so years.

Posted by: Kem25

Does anybody know if they plan on taking any more batches of lateral transfers???

No.

Not so 7MPOC. The last contract made the requirement 10 years and then the cops could move out. But as stated earlier future contracts will probably reduce the time. Also civil service requires that applicants live in a city or town for one year PRIOR to the CS test so you can claim preference. Boston has no control over this.

Rumor is that there will be a class in a few months but it will be very small....5 or less! Guess word has gotten around that the ig city isn't so great after all.

Posted by: j809

I know two that went there and hate it. Why would anyone want to shovel a ton of shit for less money when they can shovel very little for more money. Grass isn't always greener somewhere else.

Hype? What hype? All they had to do was listen to a scanner for a couple of nights to know it's a busy place. Going from call to call and breaking up domestics and bar fights all night is just the name of the game some nights. Bright Lights, Big City it aint. I just feel sorry for the guys who lateraled over who fell for the rumor of the return of the Boom Boom Room.

Hype meaning it's actually a good job! They fell for it. Now they have to live there for 10 years and send their kids to a private school. They will never be anything but a number. And for anyone who doesn't think this Commissioner won't fire someone for living somewhere else........you are fooling yourself. He will!

For everyone having kids.....................that's your fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You wan to be a P.O. in the city then live for it, for you, not your spouse!!!!!!!!!! Be your own person for once in your life, families belong in the boondocks!!!!!!!!!!!! Anwhere you can take a train and no t have to drive will just do fine....A$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also if you can't handle city life...................HOW ARE YOU GOING TO WORK FOR IT?|????????????????????????? STAY ON THE SHORES WHERE YOU BELONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I and most of the guys I work with work in the big city and live in the boondocks. You couldn't pay me enough to live in the city itself, either yours or the one I work in. Plus many of us do have kids and are still able to have very rewarding and productive careers... I'm very glad that my city does not have residency rules, they are very counter productive... and I was born in and intially grew up in Boston.

So what exactly are you trying to say, that those of us who live in the boondocks can't be good city cops?

Posted by: crisco88

Didn't say that and stop trying to stir up sh*t. I'm waiting to get on in Boston and I've been paying the rent so I can! My apartment in any other town would be at least 25% cheaper than what I am paying now. Nothing enraged me more than when Davis let 56 transfer in, I know there was a crisis but to everyone playing by the retarded rules it was a slap in the face!! Plus it pushed me back what?, at least a year, and thats if I 'm lucky!!!! Only thing that is helping is the soon to be baby boomer retirement!!! I've been to L.A. numerous times, You need to take a two hour drive to get anywhere that has more than four trees on the street, not including traffic time, because there is nothing worse than L.A. freeway traffic.

Posted by: LA Copper

I'm not trying to stir up anything, that's why I asked a question. You're the one who has all kinds of !!!!!! and the word a$$ in your post. Kind of a lot of stuff for someone who isn't on the job in the big city department yet. I wish you luck and hope you get on soon. Maybe one day in the near future the city will finally get rid of the archaic residency rule and you can move out too.

Los Angeles is similar to Boston, if you know your way around, you can get around the traffic. I live 35 miles away from downtown and have lots of trees and a park on my street, although admittedly it's still nothing compared to the boondocks back there, which are nicer than out here.

The expressway traffic was pretty bad too, just like out here, it's just that we have more cars!

Here's an idea; how about you actually get on the job before you attempt to pass judgement on those who have been doing it since you were playing with Power Rangers?

Not even on the job and you're bitching. And ya you are stiring up shit. Plus you're crapping on guys (that you want to work with right?) that have already played the game and got on.. So exactly how long have you been playing by the retarded rules?? Some guys have played these retarded rules longer than you've been eligible.. I say that because you sound like you're from the Age of Entitlement generation.. You're just another young dumb ass, fresh and impatient.
And as far as paying the expensive rent; per your own quote, "that's your fault".

crisco88 it is time for a slap !! Shut up,read, take the advice of the
seasoned officers.

Posted by: Kem25

Crisco I asked the question about future laterals because I was talking about it with a few of the people I work with....that being POLICE OFFICERS who may be interested in a lateral transfer. If you do not like what the commissioner is doing now (being a civilian/whine bag) then you should give up and go for another job because you will never be happy you A$$!!!!

Most of the Guys Loved it. But they all knew when they made the jump that they were going to start from Scratch. But the ones I spoke to told me the extra 20,000.00 in base pay and more in Details made the move worth it.

Posted by: gtd212

I've heard mixed rumors on whether they are taking more or not. People seem to think they will have to at some point, but no one has heard it will be this summer or any other time in the near future.

Posted by: mikemac64

Apparently the current list is over populated with retards. I think I can safely assume at least 1 of them has internet access in his overpriced apartment.

That said, one guy I worked with on my former job went to BPD and from what I gather from our conversations, he likes it.

I don't know about the 20K more in base, these guys took a hit going there and maxed out is very close to what one was making and the same as the other, one lost 12 years from other PD, dumb move. You can always make $ on details in your place or other communities. Alot of forced OT which sucks, scheduled vacations and more things. I told them to do their homework, I persoanlly think it's a young man's job to work in BPD, good for young guys that just got on and made the move, bad for seasoned veterans.

J809, I spoke with two guys from BPD at a training class this week. They said the forced ot is pretty much gone. the academy has pumped out six classes in 4 years. Vacations can be swapped but captain must approve it and if he doesn't like you well......you keep the week you don't want. They also gave me a web site for their academy www.bostonpoliceacademy.com I just checked it out. very nice work by the recruits of each of the last five classes. A must see by anyone going into that academy or even one of the regional academies. Great "peek in the window" I wish I had 25 years ago.

A Few of the guys who came over one had 19 years on his other Dept the other had 14 years on his Dept. The question I asked each one was it worth giving up you seniority, Sick, Vacation, Etc... They said they would do it all over if they had the chance again. So as with all Depts. you take the good with the bad on all aspects of Police Work. Most of them made the move because they said there was a better chance to advance, Sgt, Lt and work in some of the special units. Most of the Officers that were seasoned Vets took a lot of their Knowledge to this job and it has given the BPD more experience. So yes they gave up a lot to make the move but most of them knew that when they did. They still keep the Retirement time. We welcome them with open arms.

Robert35, You bring up excellent points. I wish them all good luck in theie career with BPD. May it be a safe one.

Wait!!! Picture this!!! I am a police officer in a small city or town and its very boring, Boston which is a very busy city is hiring, I say great I want to transfer because I want to see more action, I then get the transfer and get on Boston, now I am miserable because I have to much action booooo hoooooo, to bad!!

Lesson learned!
Be careful what you wish for you just might get it!!!

It shouldn't "engrage" you that Davis took 56 laterals. How is it bad for a big city to add veteran Officers to the force? The fact is that BPD should do away with the residency BS. Whether you believe it or not, one could be an excellent Cop without residing in the city they work in. I feel bad for you in that you want BPD so bad you are living there, apparently just to get on BPD. In an ideal world they would open up the testing nationwide (like LAPD) and I guarantee you this would be GOOD for Boston. It is PURE STUPIDITY to limit your pool of candidates based on a residency requirement. I lived in LA for a few years and from what I observed LAPD was a very professional organization, as was the other local agencies. They all seemed very squared away. I wonder if this impression I got has something to do with opening up testing to a LARGER group of candidates, thus more qualified persons to choose from???? This is frowned upon in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts......

Couldn't agree more, CISCO feels "entitled". What makes him think BPD will even want him? Police jobs aren't for everyone CISCO. There are psych tests and background investigations etc. I guess time will tell if you are even qualified to become an Officer.......

Posted by: scungie

This guy who is not on the job yet and has been waiting???? Boston exhausted there residency list when they took laterals, so you either did not get called (missed the mail that day) or you couldn't pass? Or like stated by many others you are barely old enough to have taken the test, therefore weren't on the list (but I am sure you are entitled, even though you might live in Brighton, you will never be from Brighton). There is a class in now, apparently you didn't score high enough there either?

You head must be so big now as it is, god help the people you work with if you get on anywhere. I am sure I don't have to say these things to you, because I am sure you already know, atleast you think you know everything else.
