ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Escondido police say one of two newlywed Marines who went missing on Monday has been spotted trying to withdraw money from an ATM in Salina, Kansas.
Police have been looking for 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Margaret McMahon-Reid and 22-year-old Pfc. George Reid II after they were placed on "unauthorized absence" status Tuesday for failing to report to duty. Police said McMahon-Reid was spotted at the cash machine. The case is now being handled by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
While the surveillance video gives them comfort, McMahon's mother, Kathy McMahon, told Long Island's Newsday, "it also provides a great deal of frustration as to how she can be this long out of communication with us . . . They seem to have every opportunity to put our fears to rest and choose not to." Through phone calls between McMahon-Reid and her mother, as well as her and two friends, the family learned the New York-native had argued with her husband a day before she disappeared, Newsday reported. Phone calls reportedly went straight to McMahon's voicemail — something her family said was uncharacteristic of her. McMahon's sister denied her sister would flee as a way to avoid going to Iraq. "She wouldn't run away to avoid going there," 26-year-old Kim McMahon told Newsday. "I don't know if she left on her own free will. But something's just not right." Reid's family in North Carolina declined to talk to the newspaper, saying "police [in California] told us not to answer questions, and we're not." Marine Lt. Neal Griffin says there were no signs of foul play in the couple's Escondido home, rather it appears they packed their things and left. Both joined the Marines 10 months ago and work as communication equipment operators. Neither had been deployed in combat with the Marines.
Missing Marine Couple Turn Themselves In, Return to California Base
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — A newlywed Marine couple have surrendered to authorities, two weeks after their disappearance alarmed relatives who said they initially suspected foul play. Marine officials say Lance Cpl. Margaret McMahon-Reid and Pfc. George Reid II turned themselves in after being placed on "unauthorized absence" status for failing to report for duty. Officials say the couple were scheduled to be returned to Camp Pendleton Monday.
The couple disappeared from their Escondido apartment on March 31. Relatives initially told police they suspected foul play. But police dropped the case five days later, saying it appeared the couple simply packed up and left.
