You gotta be kidding me!? I'm not trying to sh!t on you, but that's really the first time you ever saw that? I've seen it all over the place. That's actually a retired Trooper in the painting.... not sure of his name. I got an original print on graduation day from the academy. If you look around, you'll see ceramic figurines and stuff like that made from the painting. I actually have a container of coffee with that on the front.

It was I that saw it for the first time, forgive me for being unsophisticated. Being honest I have never seen it before and I especially thought it was different seeing it where I did...a science museum gift shop in Charlotte, NC. I can get you one on a magnet if you want.

Posted by: kttref

I got a print of that for my husband when he graduated the academy...one of the guys from IPTM has that on a tie...he wore all LE related ties this week...I didn't know they made so many.

Posted by: PBC FL Cop

Didn't the trooper and the kid in the picture do a picture signing not that long ago??

Posted by: kttref

They must be quite old by now..at least the trooper.

Posted by: Robert35

Nephew was in last RTC I have a Photo of Both Men now in their later years. The Painting was of a Real Trooper. Been around for a Long time. One of the Best For the Electric Blue Troopers.

Dick Clemens

FYI a Sgt from Lee PD posed for a "remake" photo of the painting about 8 years ago, complete with a .357 jammed into a 9mm holster.

Needless to say, it didn't go over well.

It doesn't matter who you are or what your profession is, that painting speaks a thousand words. It has always been one of my favorites.A true classic.

Much like a Scarface or Tupac poster in every shitead's apt, 'The Runaway' is in every cop's home.. Well, at least in all the ones I know. And yes, per the stereotype I have one in mine...

Those have actually been replaced by UFC posters.

What, the 5-2 120 lbs "tough guy" with UFC posters and tattoos? 2 years ago it was "Scarface", way before that it was Ice Cube. Same losers, different window dressing.

The Trooper featured in the painting is Richard "Dick" Clemens. He is still alive living in NY state. The young man "Ed", is still alive living in Berkshire County. The counterman, no one really remembers his name or knows much about him. Even the Norman Rockwell Museum has nothing. I obtained much of the historical details on this painting a few years ago from them. I have also met both Ed and Dick and have several autographed prints. In case anyone is wondering, the painting was done at his studio, not a real diner. The seats are from the HoJo's in/around Lee; the backwall from somewhere else. It was not Joe's Diner in lee as some folks like to claim. I have seen the sketches and talked to the models.

I though it was the HoJo's on the Lenox/Pittsfield line that is now the Dakota Restaurant.

Joe's Diner milked it for the publicity and really raised hell with the fake Runaway photo.

Wow!!!
Small world eh! Dick Clemens daughter, (perhaps grandaughter?) Mary Clemens, went to Stonehill College and dated my best friend back in the early 80's. She was rightfully proud of that painting and she was a sweetheart too!

Not sure if you quoted me by accident instead of the original poster, but I have seen it before - many times. I was just expressing my fondness of Norman Rockwell art

Both Dick Clemens and Ed did come out to the Academy for a talk with the 79th RTT, posed for pictures and signed some autographs...awful nice fellows.

Hey, guys and gals, I am happy to see that a lot of you have a fondness for Norman Rockwell and his painting of "The Runaway"

That rendering has long been a part of my residence, along with a small, desk top figurine of the image.

My wife (a Chicopee girl) and I have visited the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge on a number of occassions. In fact, here is a photo of us at the museum

It is a great place to visit and take in the original artwork of such a great American painter.

On a serious note, you are a handsome, handsome man.

Dick Clemens and Ed Locke are the names I believe. I have one of the signed prints from them both; proudly displayed I must say.

We went there a few years ago...and some broad was taking pictures of all the paintings...needless to say we mentioned something about it to her (because it's not allowed) and she wanted to throw down...but we took the higher road and walked away...stupid broad.

Posted by: Andy0921

Wow. Dumb broad. You should have punched her in the throat, Tony.

Posted by: kttref

Andy...you're ruthless today aren't you?

+1 on that...I actually drove the "runaway" home that day the visited....all the way out to Stockbridge to get him home that day.....what a great guy...very humble...very simple guy for someone who is in so many homes ...the entire trip he was in awe to be in a MSP cruiser...figured it was the least that could be done considering ..

I'm 30 (20+years from retirement), but I've been practicing that look for about 26 years. Good Job!
