I am trying to get into the disp field (already have 7 yrs expeirence with the "help I've fallen and can't get up" job) and I have applied for 3 disp jobs. Is there any training I can get to "boost" my resume. Do they have e-911 certification classes for people who aren't currently in the position? Any information is helpful. I want a disp job so bad I can taste it!!!

You make that face like it's a bad thing. After doing the "help I've fallen and I can't get up thing for 7 years and seeing how a business is run I want to get into the "meat" of things. Time to move on to bigger and better things

Tell me you didn't work for lifeline!

As for dispatching jobs, I don't believe you can get E911 certified without a sponser such as the department you work for. I would check the other threads out there about dispatch jobs. Lots of good reading.

I believe you have to be woking in a PSAP and are then sent to the E911 classes...I have NEVER seen anyone at the class or any of the continuing Ed classes we are required to take who paid their own way.

LOL, you can have my job, leaving that for a better dispatch job with a less...Hostile Work Enviorment....be careful what you wish for..lol...

Thanks for the info. I guess I will just keep applying to anything I see in my area. I applied at my local PD and so far haven't heard anything back. Just took the test at MSP and was hired @ another place but don't know if the schedule can go with my daughters daycare hours! Keep your fingers crossed for me!!

The PSAP from the agency I was hired took care of getting me E911 certified. The PSAP has to fill out a form containing your info and dept. info then it gets sent to the telecomunications board. I don't think you can get certified without it.

Good luck in the field, I do have to agree with mtc as to questioning why you are going to get into dispatching. Do not get me wrong in the fact that it is a good job to do but dispatchers are the forgotten children of public safety sometimes.
In regards to your question everyone is right in saying that if you get hired your agency will put you through the 911 training and most likely EMD training as well. Once again good luck.

I want to get back into the "meat" of things and I want to learn something new. I am not looking to be noticed, I am looking to work and go home and feel good about what I did. I know all jobs have their pros and cons but that comes with any job you do now a days. I want to do things again and be hands on, not just sit behind a desk!

FYI- when you dispatch, all you do is sit behind a desk. The only time i can leave is if I have to go to the bathroom.

As for hands on, all the hands on you do is, answering phone, putting call in computer, and running paperwork.

I'm ok with sitting behind a desk just as long as I am doing something productive. At this point in my current "business as usual" job I sit behind a desk but do "nothing". Change is good and needs to happen while it can.

THAT - is good - because the only time we get noticed, is when we phuck up....

OK, I'll qualify - "usually" the only time we get noticed.... I've actually received three "attagirl" 's - in 9+ years here !

So, once in 3 years someone will say 'you done good' !

It's funny that you say that because the 3 years I've been dispatching know I've gotten one good job, and one kinda "good job" followed by a "BUT......."

Well HB - I'd say you are slightly above average! But.......
