Police find leads in Port break-ins
By Katie Curley
Staff Writer

GEORGETOWN — Georgetown police this week arrested three men in connection with car break-ins that could be connected to break-ins throughout Topsfield, Danvers, Newburyport and Newbury over the past two months.
"The break-ins have been going on in Georgetown for the past two weeks," Detective Jim Rodden said. "We are up to five break-ins, mainly overnight."
On Wednesday night, police arrested Christopher J. Collins and Manuel Santiago, both 18, from Danvers on charges of breaking into a vehicle in the parking lot of the Longview Apartment Complex off Tenney Street. After further investigation, Rodden arrested Robert Ashworth, 20, of Georgetown, at 255 Central St. yesterday morning in connection with the break-ins. Yesterday, Rodden expected a fourth arrest to be forthcoming.
"They had been going after change, stereo equipment, anything they could get their hands on," Rodden said.
Rodden has been in touch with the Newburyport and Newbury police and have notified them of the arrests.
Newburyport police have been urging residents to take valuables out of their cars and to make sure to lock up after a rash of overnight break-ins in the residential Turkey Hill neighborhood and at the commuter train station. Some 17 cars were broken into. Global Positioning Systems, iPods, computers and money have been stolen out of cars.
Some cars were unlocked, but in cases where cars were locked and valuables were clearly visible, the thieves smashed windows in order to get in.
