After a chase Thursday through two towns, police arrested an Ashland man on his seventh drunken driving charge.
Steven E. Levine, 45, was ordered held without bail at his arraignment yesterday. He must return to Framingham District Court on Monday for a hearing to determine if he is a danger to the public.
Levine was arrested at 7:48 p.m. in the parking lot of Outpost Farm on Prentice Street in Holliston after a chase that started on Chestnut Street in Hopkinton, said prosecutor Nick Cramb.
Hopkinton Police Officer Matthew McNeil was driving eastbound when he saw a black pickup truck speeding toward him and swerving. He clocked the truck going 60 mph in a 40 mph zone.
McNeil attempted to stop the vehicle, and the pickup truck increased its speed to 80 mph as it crossed into Holliston, Cramb said.
Once in Holliston, the truck slowed and pulled into the farm's parking lot.
McNeil ordered the driver out of the truck, but Levine ignored orders to get out, Cramb said.
According to a report filed in court by McNeil, Levine had bloodshot and glassy eyes.
The officer threatened to use pepper spray if Levine did not get out the truck.
"He pleaded for me not to," the officer wrote.
When ordered out of the truck, Levine again said no, and McNeil and several other officers dragged the man out of the truck. Once out, Levine landed face down on the ground, and he suffered cuts to his face while being handcuffed.
McNeil said he called for an ambulance.
"I heard him say, 'I had a few beers' when asked if he had anything to eat or drink by one of the EMTs," McNeil said.
Holliston Police Officer Ciara Ryan assisted McNeil with the stop and briefly spoke to Levine.
"I noted (he) slurred his words and repeated the same same phrases over and over, such as, 'What happened? I was just going to pull over. What happened?' " Ryan wrote in a report. " 'At one point, the subject told me that he 'had a few drinks,' and then quickly added on, 'But I am not telling anyone anything without my lawyer.' "
Levine was taken to Milford Regional Medical Center to be treated for his cuts. McNeil wrote that the hospital room "filled up with an odor of alcoholic beverages," from Levine's breath.
Levine refused a Breathalyzer test.
Levine, of 120 Central St., was charged with driving under the influence of liquor, a subsequent offense, resisting arrest, use of a vehicle during a felony, failure to stop for police, driving with a suspended license, a subsequent offense, the negligent operation of a vehicle and driving without his license in his possession.
Levine was also cited for a passing violation, speeding and a marked lanes violation.
Levine was previously convicted of drunken driving in November 1984 and June 1985 in Framingham District Court; in April 1986 in Wrentham District Court; in August 1988 in Barnstable District Court; and in October 1995 and March 2000 in Framingham District Court.
Levine will be held over the weekend at the Middlesex Jail in Cambridge and will be in court on Monday for the dangerousness hearing.
