Convention center bounces service

The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center has bounced Seaport Valet from the Southie convention site

A lucrative valet parking gig at the South Boston Convention Center has ended for a politically wired court officer who runs the company after state ethics officials raised questions about the deal, the Herald has learned.
The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC) “parted ways” with Seaport Valet and its owner Tim Foley after ethics officials notified the agency that the contract may be in violation of state law, said Massachusetts Convention Center Authority chief executive Jim Rooney.
Rooney said the convention authority’s lawyer reviewed the law and came to the same conclusion. The MCCA recently told Foley he would either have to dispute the finding or “cure it” by quitting his state job, but both sides decided to part ways, Rooney said.
In an e-mailed statement, Foley said, “I never hid the fact that I’m a court officer . . . but the moment I learned it was causing an Ethics Commission concern I hired an attorney who. . . immediately informed the BCEC that I wished to terminate the contract.”
The development comes two months after a Herald report revealed that Foley, a relative of former Senate President William M. Bulger, got a no-bid contract to run the valet parking at the busy convention center. A $65,000-a-year full-time court officer, Foley landed the deal in 2004 and had run it until the Herald inquired about the arrangement.
MCCA officials told the Herald in January that the valet parking was a “pilot program” that would be going out to public bid this year. Rooney said yesterday that the convention authority plans to start seeking bids from new companies starting April 7, with hopes of having a new valet service in place by June 1.
He said the size of the contract, $135,000, would remain roughly the same. The valet service costs $20, compared to $10 to park in the hall’s lot.
“To his credit, I would say they have provided a superior level of service,” Rooney said of Seaport Valet.
