Panicking passengers on New York's subway system rushed for the exits when a bomb appeared to go off - only for the scare to be blamed on a student's science project.
Gregory Kats has apologised after an electronic device in his rucksack short-circuited and began sending smoke streaming across the station platform.
As commuters scrambled to escape, he tried to reassure them he was no terrorist but only a rookie scientist needing to go back to the drawing-board.
Mr Kats, 29, said the device was just a model of an elevator's inner workings for a college project.
But the box he was holding had a small battery, wires and a motor, leading those around him to fear it may be a bomb - even as he struggled to dismantle the contraption.
He frantically tried to assure people: "Don't worry - this is my science project."
But he later acknowledged: "They were panicking, and I realized their fear."
The computer engineering student at the New York City of Technology was questioned by police yesterday but later released.
He said: "I'm very sorry for what happened. I hate to scare people. Next time, I'll be much more careful and keep my electronic projects at home."
