No One Injured In Explosions

Video: Police Unsure If Mailbox Explosions Connected

MEREDITH, N.H. -- Police in the Lakes Region are investigating two mailbox explosions that occurred in the same afternoon.

One explosion happened in Meredith and the other happened a few miles away in Center Harbor. No one was hurt in the explosions, and the homeowners weren't home at the time, but the explosions were powerful enough to destroy the mailboxes.

"It's just a bunch of metal all bent up and destroyed," Meredith Detective John Eichhorn said. "It was a pretty good explosion."

Center Harbor homeowner Charles Shute found his blown-up mailbox on the road.

"I came home, and it was lying in the road, so I went over to the neighbor to ask if they had heard anything," Shute said.

Shute was gathering sap in the woods when the vandals struck. He said he was surprised by the explosion but not inconvenienced.

"I haven't been getting my mail here because the snow banks iced up so much," Shute said. "I'm getting it delivered at the post office."

The Meredith homeowner had left his house for a few hours and returned to find his mailbox in pieces, Eichhorn said. The post the mailbox was mounted on wasn't damaged, but the front door of the mailbox was blown across the street.

Police said the mailboxes could have been destroyed by children playing with explosives and believe the crimes were random. They don't if they're connected.

Investigators said they think the explosives could be about the size of large firecrackers such as M-80s.
