After ramming his car into a police cruiser, a Wareham man asked a Braintree police officer to shoot him.
At 10:35 a.m. Tuesday, Scott R. Blackburn, 35, of East Wareham drove his Toyota Corolla into the Bayshore Athletic Club parking lot in Braintree and banged into the back of a cruiser, according to a press release. Officer James Mosesso, who was parked in the police car while watching traffic on John Mahar Highway, turned around and saw the car backing away.
Officer Mosesso got out of his cruiser and called to Mr. Blackburn, who continued to drive his car away. He eventually stopped his car, then got out and walked away from Officer Mosesso despite the officer's verbal warnings. Mr. Blackburn eventually turned around and made a motion toward his waist as if to draw a firearm. When the officer drew his own firearm, Mr. Blackburn asked him to shoot him.
"He was acting in a manner that made it appear to police that he was armed," Braintree Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said.
As the officer made repeated requests for Mr. Blackburn — who was later determined to be unarmed — to move his hand from his waist, Mr. Blackburn continued to ask the officer to shoot him.
Eventually, Mr. Blackburn was taken into custody and was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (his car), assault, disorderly conduct, operating after his license was revoked and leaving the scene of an accident.
When he was asked why he had run into the police cruiser, Mr. Blackburn said he was just being stupid and he wanted the officer to shoot him.
Deputy Chief Jenkins said there was no real damage to the cruiser.
