Westport —
Two men were arrested as they allegedly prepared to sell a stolen car to a scrap metal yard, police said.
Robert Mudd, 25, of Cypress Avenue, Tiverton, and Anthony McCants, 50, of 170 Fifth St., Fall River, are each charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit that offense and driving after license suspended. Mudd also is charged with leaving the scene of an accident after causing property damage.
Police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Majewski said officers were watching for a 1996 Nissan Altima Tuesday after receiving reports of the car traveling erratically on Reed Road, then at Charlotte White and Main roads where the vehicle ran over a posted stop sign.
Police stopped Mudd as he allegedly was moving the car toward the entrance to Excel Auto Recycling, 37 Charlotte White Road.
“He had already removed the stolen registration plates from the car,” Majewski alleged.
McCants was arrested as he occupied a second motor vehicle, registered to Mudd’s mother, Majewski stated. McCants allegedly placed the stolen registration plates from the Nissan on the ground when he exited the second vehicle, Majewski said.
The Nissan was reported stolen to Fall River police last month. “The car was set to be scrapped for about $220,” Majewski alleged.
He and Officer Chris Dunn investigated the incident.
