Man 'is five months pregnant'

A US man who used to be a woman is reportedly five months pregnant.
The Advocate magazine features a picture of Thomas Beatie with a man's beard and flat chest above his swollen stomach.

Mr Beatie, who was born a woman, describes himself as a "transgender male" in the piece which says his decision to have a child "has been met with discrimination and outright derision by health care professionals".
The article, entitled Labour of Love, appears in the most recent issue of the Los Angeles-based magazine for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender readers.

Mr Beatie says he went through a sex change but decided to have only chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy, stopping short of making any changes to the reproductive organs he was born with.

Mr Beatie is legally male and lives with his wife, Nancy, in Bend, Oregon. The couple, who have been together 10 years, wanted to have children.
Mrs Beatie was unable to conceive, so the couple decided Mr Beatie should try to carry a baby.

He stopped the hormone injections and his periods returned, he writes. After a year - and nine doctors - he was able to get pregnant using frozen donor sperm but the pregnancy was ectopic and required surgery.

But a second pregnancy was a success and the couple's daughter is due on 3 July, the article states.
Mr Beatie said: "How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am.

"To Nancy, I am her husband carrying our child. I will be my daughter's father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family."

Neal Broverman, associate editor of The Advocate, confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that the magazine had spoken to his doctor to confirm he was indeed expecting.

Amazing photographs show 'pregnant man' and wife posing as body-builders in bikinis

These are the amazing before and after photographs of "pregnant man" Thomas Beatie.

They show the 34-year-old and his "wife" Nancy posing for gay magazine Odyssey in skimpy bikinis before his operation and then, just four years later, in a mocked up wedding-style picture.
The images were released as the Hawaiian native insisted his pregnancy was real and claimed he is "perfectly capable" of giving birth - despite years of hormone treatments to make him a male.

Personal Odyssey: Beatie, as a woman, and Nancy pose for the cover of a gay magazine in 2000

Beatie will emerge from hiding on Thursday after reportedly striking an exclusive deal with American chat show host Oprah Winfrey to appear on her daytime programme on Thursday.

"I'm a person and I have the right to have my own biological child," he tells her, according to an excerpt released to the U.S. media.
But doubts continue to surround the bizarre story, which was revealed in a gay magazine alongside photos of Beatie's growing stomach.
Sceptics claim it is an elaborate hoax that will be revealed tomorrow on April Fool's Day.
There was also speculation that the story could be connected to a new series masterminded by actor Ashton Kutcher, which plays pranks on the media.
The show is a follow-up to the star's MTV reality hit "Punk'd", which targets celebrities in mocked-up embarrassing scenarios.
Wedded bliss: Thomas Beatie and his 'wife' Nancy smile happily for the cameras after his sex-change operation

Doctors, however, have confirmed that Beatie's pregnancy is possible. Although, he legally became a man after undergoing a sex change operation, Beatie still kept his female reproductive organs.
He and his wife, Nancy, 45, are said to show off his prominent bump on the Oprah Winfrey show and maintain that he is expecting a baby girl in July.
"Who hires a surrogate if they are perfectly capable of carrying their own child?" he says.

The couple are believed to be on holiday in Hawaii. They lived in Honolulu - where Beatie was formerly known as Tracy Lagondino - before moving two years ago to Oregon, where they run a T-shirt business intriguingly titled "Define Normal".
Neighbours say the deal with Oprah includes an agreement that they will not grant any other interviews until after the show has aired.

Thomas Beatie was born a woman but is now married to one. This image, published in an American magazine, allegedly shows his pregnant tummy and breast removal scars

With his wife unable to conceive because of a hysterectomy she had after an illness, Beatie claimed he stopped taking his twice-weekly testosterone injections and started getting periods again after an eight-year break.
He used a sperm donor to get pregnant using a home insemination kit. He even told The Advocate, a U.S. magazine for gays, lesbians and transgender people, that he fell pregnant earlier with triplets but they had to be aborted because of dangerous complications.
But he admitted that he and his wife are in uncharted territory, and that they have faced opposition from family, friends and the medical profession.
"Wanting a biological child is neither a male nor a female desire, but a human desire," he said.
Friends of the couple say they were shocked by Beatie's decision to become a man, who, as a woman, had campaigned rigorously for same sex marriage.
Gay friend Hans Anderson, 50, said: "I was surprised because Tracy has always seemed so happy as a lesbian with her partner Nancy.
"She'd never said anything about wanting a gender change and she didn't tell anyone about having her op."
If Beatie's turns out to be confirmed, he will not be the first transgender man to carry a baby. Patrick Califa-Rice, of San Francisco, wrote about his transgender male partner, Matt Rice, giving birth to their son in a 2000 article in New York's Village Voice.
