Patrick Says Crime Down In Brockton

BOSTON -- A surge of state police troopers working in tandem with Brockton police has led to a reduction in violent crime in the city.

Gov. Deval Patrick said Tuesday it's the kind of state and local partnership that can be replicated in other arenas.

Some 15 to 20 troopers were added earlier this year in Brockton, but crime spiked when they were withdrawn. Since their return on Feb. 20, there have been no shootings in the city and police made an arrest that led to charges in an earlier shooting.
The governor acknowledged there is a cost to the surge, but he said the city and state had no choice and their side-by-side work is a model for partnerships in economic development and other arenas.

Almost at exactly the same time Patrick was in the city - and I don't think this will be 'random' either.

Family: Game led to teen’s murder

An 18-year-old Brockton man is being held on $1 million bail for allegedly shooting his neighborhood friend over a video game.
William Suarez of 317 Battles Farm Road, pleaded not guilty in Brockton District Court yesterday to charges of manslaughter and illegal possession of a firearm in connection with Tuesday’s shooting death of 15-year-old Olivier Baptiste.
Relatives of the victim allege Suarez waved a gun at Baptiste in front of several other friends because it was his turn to play a video game - and the gun went off.
“My nephew didn’t give Billy the game quick enough, and so he shot him,” said Baptiste’s aunt, Nadia Gay.
“They’ve been friends for a while, more than four years,” said Gay of her nephew and Suarez. “They were like brothers. They ate each other’s food. They would help each other. They come to this house to do homework. They spent countless hours together. That was more than friendship. Billy wasn’t a stranger.”
Grief counselors were made available at Brockton High School, where Baptiste was a sophomore, and Suarez a 2007 graduate. James Hayden, Executive Director of Operations and School Administration, said that students who were close to the victim were “dealt with in a sensitive and personal manner.” Sophomores who were scheduled to take the MCAS test were allowed a make-up date. “It was imperative to school administrators that students’ emotional needs came first,” said Hayden.
The shooting occurred one hour after Gov. Deval Patrick addressed Brockton and state police for their efforts in bringing down the number of shootings since mid-February.
Brockton saw four homicides since the beginning of 2008.
“There is no anger,” said Gay. “That won’t bring our baby back. Olivier wasn’t a bad son. He wasn’t in a gang. He was a handsome, outgoing boy and he would light up a room.”

More police mean less crime?

Holy crap Deval, you should receive the Nobel Peace Prize for that brilliant observation! Who else would have ever dreamed up that brilliant criminological theory?

BROCKTON —
When his friend Olivier Baptiste refused to hand over a video game Tuesday, Brockton police say, William Suarez pulled a gun from his waistband, pointed it at the 15-year-old boy's head and pulled the trigger. It didn't fire. But Suarez pulled the trigger again and Baptiste was shot in the head. Now Baptiste is dead and Suarez is being held on $1 million bail. Mr. Suarez is or should I say was a Massasoit College student. I remember this scumbag registering for class in January. He was a complete jackass. I said to myself he will be in jail in few years. however I was wrong, it was only a few months.

Thats nice. Give me the video game no ok bang. Seems a bit extreme to me. Suarez may just be a victim of society. (I'm just kidding)
