JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --
Prisoner Damien Deshaun Dennis and a corrections officer were injured in an altercation just before dinner Saturday at the Duval County pretrial detention facility, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Chief Rick Graham said Dennis became increasingly violent during an altercation on the fifth-floor of the jail. Backup was called and several corrections officers suffered minor injuries.
Dennis became unresponsive, Graham said, and was hospitalized at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center. One corrections officer was also hospitalized with what were called serious but not life-threatening injuries, but he was released on Sunday.
Dennis, 28, was awaiting trial for almost a year on seven felony charges, including auto theft and forging licenses and falsifying documents. Police said he is now also charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.
Dennis remains in serious condition, but police said he is stable.
On Sunday night, Dennis' father told Channel 4 that he learned about the altercation almost 24 hours after his son was hospitalized, and only from relatives of other inmates, not police.
"My major concern was whether he was even alive," Gerald Clawson told Channel 4's Diane Cho. "I want to know what led up to this between the officer and my son."
