Frostproof, Florida - A Polk County Sheriff's Office deputy is alive "By the grace of God" tonight after shooting and killing a suspect who attacked him with a knife and tried stabbing him multiple times, according to Sheriff Grady Judd.
Deputy Richard Larence responded to a civil disturbance at a manufactured home at 811 Fazzini road at approximately 4:50 PM.
According to Polk County authorities, 38-year-old Jackson Cheldnik was waiting for Deputy Larence on the front porch holding a knife after his father, who owns the home, called authorities. The father grew concerned when Cheldnik began to force the knife into a kitchen table.
When Deputy Larence arrived he asked Cheldnik to put down his weapon. The 52-year-old had his taser out, but was not prepared for what happened next. Cheldnik jumped on top of the deputy and tried stabbing him. The deputy did get one taser shot, but Cheldnik pulled out the taser prong and continued his attack.
"He tasered him, but nothing. I've never heard of that before" said Judd, when asked if he's had a similar case in Polk County.
Deputy Larence, a 12-year vet with an extensive military background, eventually pulled out his gun and was able to shoot off a few rounds killing Cheldnik. Neighbors across the dirt road approximately forty yards away ran over and assisted the deputy according to Judd after witnessing the exchange.
As of 9:20 PM Friday night the victim lied in the front yard covered by a sheet. There was a grisly image held firmly in his left hand, the knife used in the attack. The victim's father has been very cooperative with authorities and told them that his son had a history of mental problems.
As for Deputy Larence, he was in surgery late Friday night at Lake Wales Hospital for a gunshot wound beneath the knee that was sustained while wrestling with Cheldnik. According to Judd, Deputy Larence is a "very experienced, very professional very capable deputy."
And tonight he is lucky to be alive.
