Kingston —
Just call him Massachusetts’ own Forrest Gump.
Thomas Lynch, 46, of Sandwich is walking from Bourne to Boston to draw attention to U.S. troops serving overseas. His lone companion is the Army Airborne flag.
He’s not raising money, just acting as a reminder of the soldiers still in harm’s way.
“I’ve done fundraisers before, but this walk just seemed like the right thing to do,” Lynch said.
On Lynch’s mind is his 20-year-old son, Daniel, who has been in Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade since June.
Lynch started his walk at 7 a.m. Thursday at the Sagamore Bridge. Traveling on Route 3A, he had reached Duxbury by 3 p.m.
Lynch hopes to average 25 to 28 miles per day and get to Boston by Saturday night. He plans to sleep at motels.
He hopes to be in Quincy this afternoon.
Lynch, the father of three sons and a daughter, initially planned to end his walk in Dorchester but now plans to walk to the State House.
Lynch, an operations supervisor with Terra Drilling Co., is taking three days off from work to do do the walk.
Lynch described what he’s doing as just pulling a “Forrest Gump.” He said it’s “just a simple way to draw attention back to the troops overseas.”
His wife, Kathy, probably “thinks I’m a little nuts,” he said.
