Police are working with a reconstructionist to piece together exactly what happened when a sport-utility vehicle plowed into a crowd of about 200 people at the Tri-State Auto Auction on Wednesday in Crestwood.
Discovering that answer won't happen overnight, Crestwood Police Chief Tim Sulikowski said.
"We expect it to be a while," he said. "We're going through a lot of evidence, and we're working with a reconstructionist."
Fifteen adults were injured when the Range Rover preparing for display accelerated, hit a minivan and spun out of control, witnesses said. Both those inside and outside the auction building were struck in the crash that occurred about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 14000 block of South Karlov.
Three people were admitted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in conditions ranging from serious to critical. Their conditions have all since been upgraded to fair, said hospital spokesman Mike Maggio. Two Crestwood firefighters were treated at South Suburban Hospital for minor injuries and released.
The auction employee driving the SUV was taken to the Crestwood Police Department for questioning before she went to the hospital, Sulikowski said.
No charges have been filed. Police have impounded the vehicle, he added.
The auction was open as scheduled Thursday.
