NEW YORK (AP) -- The widow of a New York City fire marshal who was fatally shot in his Staten Island home in December has surrendered to face a sealed indictment.
Janet Redmond-Mercereau was awaiting arraignment at Staten Island Supreme Court on Friday, said Maureen Anagnostis, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan. Specific charges were not known because the indictment was sealed.
Redmond-Mercereau, a high school teacher, surrendered to police Thursday night, accompanied by her lawyer, Mario F. Gallucci.
Her husband, Douglas Mercereau, 38, was found in bed in their Oakwood section home at about 8:25 a.m. on Dec. 2, 2007. He had been shot three times in the head. His service pistol was at his side.
The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.
His family issued a statement after learning of the indictment.
"We have patiently waited while the NYPD accumulated their evidence and completed their tests. In our hearts, we hope that a fair and just verdict is delivered swiftly, though we know that this too requires patience,'' the statement said.
Following her surrender, Gallucci told The New York Times that Redmond-Mercereau was "relieved that this has finally come to a head. She is very confident that she will be found not guilty if she can get a fair trial on Staten Island.''
Mercereau was a 12-year Fire Department veteran. He and his wife were married 12 years; they had three daughters.
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta has called the supervising fire marshal a ``rising star within the FDNY's Bureau of Fire Investigation.'
