Do these state hospitals sponsor to SSPO?

Posted by: 5-0

I think that they have in the past. The problem is that you need at least your Associates and reserve academy to get your C22 s 63 powers, so if they hire you, and you get warranted that way, they may not send you to save $$.

Posted by: Deputydog522

Alot of times they will hire you with experience and you will not get powers.

Posted by: Foxy85

until after your 4000 hours of "police" expereince?....

Posted by: HELPMe

I went to the reserve academy with alot of DMH guys. They just were not sworn until they completed the academy in-conjunction with their associates.

I could have sworn (pardon the pun) that I read that to get your SSPO waiver now, you need more than the associates and R/I. I believe you now need a certain amount of training hours, and the associates and R/I only account for about 2/3 of what you need. Anyone else have insight?

This is the link to their guidelines currently. I think you are right, but I am too lazy to read it right now.

It almost sounds like they have higher hiring standards than municipalities but pay less.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: That is not a slam at municipalities, DMH or ANYONE ELSE, just an observation.

Great bunch of guys working there. Westboro St Hospital is in the edge of the Westboro wildlife managment area and Chuancy Lake. Lots of area to cover when one of the guests takes a nature walk.

Doesn't sound too appealing;

Taunton and Tewksbury have AC. I don't know about worcester state.

It's disgusting how the state has all these facilities just rotting away while whack jobs who SHOULD be housed somewhere are roaming the streets, many committing crimes. Sure, it's good business for US, but really....

I don't mean that like, "Lock the nuts away!" I mean it like, "Let's give these people who have no place to live and can't fend for themselves a nice dry, AIR CONDITIONED place to live." The damned Commonwealth ends up paying for them one way or another, let's just do it right the first time and dump this liberal crap of "they have a right to live as they do and institutionalizing them would be WRONG."

Plus, it'll give some mental health professionals a job and cut the unemployment rate. More DMH Police jobs would open up too.

The rest of these former hospitals should be sold once and for all and put on the bloody tax rolls!

In all fairness, Worcester State Hospital has been "under contruction" for several years now....

I am just curious, do these officers patrol in cruisers and conduct police work? I have done a search on Westborough State Hospital DMH Police and the only thing I found was an instance in a police log where, a fed ex truck went off rt.9 and westborough called them (DMH) to assist with traffic. Other then that I cannot find anything else about the department.

If anyone knows anything about the place please PM me. Thanks

DMH Westborough has a new Ford Escape, and several used police Ford Explorers. I know they all have blue lights. The Escape is unmarked. Great bunch of guys. I know they patrol alot, but other than that I am not sure what they do.

Posted by: HELPMe

Thanks for the reply. The DMH departments are such different animals from hospital to hospital. I heard through the grape vine, that Taunton State Hospital DMH patrol in an old ex SP EVOC car. :-0

All DMH officers have full powers under 90-1 to make motor vehicle stops, but if you are unarmed, do you really want to be stopping cars? From what I hear, most DMH facilities are unarmed. Gun, Vest, and full bat belt for M/V stops in my opinion. And that goes for responding to pretty much any call outside of a 'secure' hospital environment.

ALL DMH Police officers are unarmed. It would be silly to keep securing your firearm every time you walk onto a locked unit (this is kind of a moot point since modern retention holsters came a long) also a lot of police officers (From towns coming on to the psych unit to serve paperwork) carry folding knifes clipped to their pockets. They will secure their weapons in a lock box but not secure their knives. Most police officers will try to do the business in the lobby and not remove their weapon from the holster (rightfully so!) instead of walking on the unit.

One time we had an emergency, at the hospital I work at some numb nut put lock boxes for the guns upstairs with a letter dated from 1981.Those were the days.... anyhow its like whoever had this idea forgot that we had other units.

Would it make sense the officer to secure their fire arm in the lock box then walk all the way around down stairs. Screw that. I remember what delta said, and let the police right in with their guns, I trust the judgment of a police officer to maintain control of their firearm. We only call the police in extreme cases. Usually we end up in a fight with liberal social workers who think we like to fight and restrain patients for fun. The police I think have only ended up on the unit in emergency cases once in the 5 years I have been at this particular facility.

Its a hospital campus, most really aren't all that big. Maybe 1 or 2 miles of roads if that. So you don't need the latest Crown vic to patrol.

That kind of turnover isn't a great endorsement of the job.
