Not a whole lot on here about metro Atlanta, so I thought I'd post some information on a few of the big metro departments. There are some good opportunities with these departments; they are always looking for good recruits and always running academies. Decent pay, decent weather, decent quality of life...not a bad deal down here.
Atlanta Police: http://www.atlantapd.org/index.asp?nav=Career Starting pay $39,000, more "extra jobs" than the department can handle (private details at hotels, clubs, some construction gigs, etc. Usually about $40 p/h). Plus plenty of work available for sporting events, concerts, etc. 1500 officers, ALWAYS looking for more.
DeKalb County Police: http://www.dekalbpubsafety.com/joinu...olice_officers Starting pay $36,500, $38,500 with degree/experience. Large department, probably busiest after City of Atlanta, great academy. Roughly 1000 officers, looking to hire 125 this year on top of running two academies to deal with normal attrition. They are testing twice a month through June.
Cobb County Police: http://www.cobbpolice.com/employment.htm Squared away department in an affluent area. They do run a lot of traffic, but they get their share of calls for service. Great benefits and perks. They are great for arming their officers; every officer issued a duty weapon, a back-up weapon and a shotgun in the car. Starting pay is $38,300. 585 officers, test for new hires several times a year.
Gwinnett County Police: http://www.gwinnettcounty.com/cgi-bi...peId=536880236 Rapidly growing bedroom county just outside Atlanta. Take-home cars if you reside in the county. A decent and affordable community to live in, good schools (esp. by Georgia standards). $35,000 to start, plus $2,000 hiring bonus and 3% incentive for associates, 6% for bachelors. 600+ officers, looking to hire 100 more.

Really appreciate your sharing this information for those looking for L.E. jobs. I know south and west are always looking for good officers but it sure helps when someone can also provide some information about the agency and the area under consideration.

Doesn't APD have a lot pf problems going on inside of it? I know they are severly understaffed and their yearly step program for pay is on freeze. I think it was the prior mayor who messed a lot of things up in the budget and they are deparately trying to get back on their feet.

You're right; Bill Campbell messed things up, and the current Mayor has had a tough time fixing them.
With the approval of the 2007/2008 budget, Atlanta Police officers finally got their "Annual Increases," or step payments, with a 5.5% raise. These had been frozen for several years due to budgetary issues. There are other problems, but this was a major step in trying to rectify the attrition and morale problems in the APD.

Of those I would recommend Gwinnette, then Cobb and I would think twice about APD and DeKalb. Forsyth County SO is another good department and I believe they are currently hiring.

Good recommendations. It's important to note that Forsyth is still a bit "country" and most everyone has to work in the jail before getting on the road. It seems to be a popular place these days, but starting pay is 31,500 for corrections officers and 33,900 for road officers. Even with the lower cost of living up there, the money could be better. It's all about what you want; I'm young and single and like living in/near the city. Those with families who want the suburban environment would be wise to consider living/working in Cobb, Gwinnett, or Forsyth.
In defense of DeKalb (I have certain loyalties), the department has some great officers, but the county has got some real tough areas (and really nice areas-it's a very diverse place in every sense of the word), and there are some leadership issues. It is the hope of a lot of people around here that those issues will start be resolved when the current CEO's term expires in November. DeKalb also provides some of the best training in the state.
