Volvo Police Cruiser????

I dont know how true this is but i was told that since ford is not making crown vic after 2009, the police departments that don't go with the dodge cars are going to get volvo's as police vehicles. I just can see a volvo as a police car.

i dont think it will ever happen... to expensive to keep up

I recall one or two towns in New Hampshire got Volvo cruisers back a few decades ago when the Volvo Tennis Tournament was being held at Waterville Valley. I think they had mixed feelings about them as being practical but I don't believe they could refuse the deal Volvo gave them to introduce them.

all I can think is "soccer mom"

Volvos have been used by police departments all across the country
for years it is nothing new.

Also in Europe and England

While Michigan cops are switching over from Crown Vics to Impalas, the UK police are holding fast with their police cruisers and have debuted the redesigned Volvo V70 in police spec with a new livery. Volvo touts the V70's interior space and increased payload capacity of 724kg (up from 539kg in a standard model) as reasons why bobbies in the UK favor the V70, telling us that these features "ensure that the vehicle can safely transport all the equipment necessary for modern policing, including heavy firearms when the situation demands." Boo-yah. So don't go approaching any V70s that look like this in the UK if you're itching for a fight. Chances are they're packing a lot of heat in their rear underfloor lockable storage area.

I think they are pretty sharp

The Crown Vic/Interceptor isn't going anywhere....the rumors of its demise have been around since 1990. It's a cash cow for Ford with little in the way of R&D every year because cops don't like change.

Posted by: j809

I just spoke to someone at MHQ today and confirmed that 2009 Ford Interceptors will be arriving by June 2008 on their lots. Supposedly they had a refreshening done to them too.

Them volvo's are butt crack ugly

Exactly Delta, the crown vic has been on the same panther platform for 20+ years. The only rumors in the mill is that the interceptor concept car may go into production sometime in 2010. However, no word if thats really going to happen. Also I would watch out for a Pontiac G8 coming out, that would make a nice interceptor.

Volvo or ford doesn't really matter ford owns volvo so they are making the money all around

My department was actually looking into Volvo's as cruisers before going with the explorers. Glad they didn't.

Posted by: Hb13

Whats the size difference between a cv and a volvo? I can barely fit into a cv drivers seat as is. I'm not to sure how I feel about the whole Volvo cruiser idea.

Posted by: jdmac33

I have heard that Ford will not make the Crown Vic line availuable to the public after 2009, however it will keep fleet production going for years to come.

The "Crown Victoria" hasn't existed for a couple of years, and doesn't appear in Ford's catalog of consumer vehicles. The Police Interceptor is only available through fleet sales.

Let's not forget that the Ford 500's are starting to make an appearance.

Yet mostly in unmarked versions.

Posted by: Oscar8

I saw a unmarked Ford 500 a few days ago down here on the cape. Its a very sharp looking UM cruiser.

I'm curious about the interior specs of the Ford 500 versus the Dodge Charger.

Posted by: hunter617

I think ford stopped making the 500 they went back to the taurus. They look justy like the 500.

The new taurus does look alot like the 500s, I've seen a few unmarked 500s up at the SPA they do look pretty good as unmarkeds though.

Posted by: Inspector

Right...The Ford 500 stopped with the '07 model. The updated Taurus replaced it. Easy to tell as the 500 grill is a screen and the Taurus is the three bars. I've seen a few unmarked Taurus on road as well.

I wonder why they stopped the 500 I thought they looked nice.

2008 Ford Taurus interior specs:

Interior Dimensions Head room - front/rear (in.) 39.6/38.8 Shoulder room – front/rear (in.) 57.8/57.6 Hip room – front/rear (in.) 53.7/53.6 Leg room – front/rear (in.) 41.3/41.2

2008 Dodge Charger interior specs:

Hip Room [in] - Front [in]56.2 Shoulder Room - Rear [in]57.6 Head Room - Front [in]38.7 Leg Room - Front [in]41.8

Crown Vic interior specs:

Headroom (Front)39.3
Headroom (Row 2)37.9
Hiproom (Front)58.0
Hiproom (Row 2)57.1
Legroom (Front)42.5
Legroom (Row 2)39.6
Shoulder Room (Front)60.8
Shoulder Room (Row 2)60.3

While a power boost wouldn't harm, I still deem the C/V as the best all around cruiser for a city/town cop.

If Ford for some foolish reason stops manufacturing the C/V police interceptor (which I highly doubt); I would take the Charger over the Impala any day. Until that point in time, if given the choice, I’ll take the Vic.

I've driven unmarked Taurus many years and do think they are okay for those of use involved in investigation. I think, however, they do not handle as well as the CV for highway work. The ride is very soft and somewhat swaying on the new Taurus.Although a more solid suspension system is available. There is also a question of space. With computer, radios, controls, radar, video equipment, cell phone, shotgun, rifle, etc there is not enough room in my estimation for patrol work in a taurus. Working criminal investigation we had only a radio and light/siren control to worry about and those fit very well inside the console. They tell me the new Taurus is about two inches wider than the old one. It seems a lot bigger. Another thing I noticed is that you sit very high as compared to the old Taurus.

the taurus isnt a police package which is why they have mushy suspensions and dont last as long under harsh treatment.

the ford 500 will only be produced for the fleet market and will not be availible to the public.
However the taurus will be availible for both public and fleet.

I have driven both chargers don't have alot of head room at all and has ALOT of blind spots.
500 although its mostly made as v6 the 6 speeds autos F*cking fly. has alot of room fo pretty much anything you want to put in it. I think this car is great as an unmarked car very sharp looking!

BTW FORD 500 IS A VOLVO IN DISGUISE!
it has a volvo body and a twist of ford and volvo disign in the engine compartment.

but overall I would highly recomend this car!

Augusta, Maine had them around that time too. must have been one hell of a salesman in those parts

I can see our town going to them, they will say it will be more community friendly.

The Taurus SHO was a 4-door sports car, not even close to a police car, and they're not even made any more.

Posted by: Fowlplay

I was talking to a couple of Harrison County (MS) interdiction deputies last week, they've had their Chargers a few months. They like the ride and the speed of the vehicle, but had to remove the spare tire from the trunk to have enough room for their equipment.

As far as unmarked cars, we've been getting a lot of Nissan Altimas and Nissan Titan trucks, which is what I have. My truck is a V-8, and flies down the road, but isn't a police package.

Posted by: Mitpo62

Ford did make a Taurus police package back in the early 90's. The city I worked for in Fla. bought them in '92. They were a front wheel driving nightmare, plus 0 leg room with the cages. Purchased to save gas money, they wound up being a fiscal disaster.

I recall an agency up in NH back in the 80's that had the Volvos. They were blue with a single blue light on the roof. Rochester?

conway police used either volvos or saabs in the 70s or 80s.

The Taurus police package had absolutely, positively nothing to do with the Taurus SHO other than sharing a nameplate. The SHO had a 32-valve V-6 with 220hp and could blow the police Taurus into the weeds.

The Taurus police package was made from 1990-1995, so its been out of production for 13 years. If you're going to roll your eyes, at least know what the hell you're talking about.

Also, the SHO's Engine was made Yamaha, was notoriously unreliable, primarily paired with a 5 Speed, and difficult to work on. Those are the reasons it was never in a police cruiser. The Volvo S80 now has a 4.4 liter v8 in made by Yamaha. The Crown Vic is here to stay and all in all is a good vehicle. What I think is interesting is the concept a company makes a vehicle specifically for Police work. Here is a link about such a company and http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...ruiser_is.htmlI think this could happen someday. (I guess this rant confirms my wifes theory I'm the king of information).

Talking about cars designed for a specific purpose..Remember when Exeter, NH tried to use that specially designed Checker as a cruiser in a big economy move? Taxi's don't even have them now.

It may have been Bartlett or North Conway that had Volvo's..I can remember going on vacation as a little kid...late 70's early 80's and seeing them....

I had a 1992 SHO and never had a problem with the engine, other than it made me drive way too fast sometimes.

"North Conway" is just a geographical section of Conway, and is covered by the Conway PD (like East Boston or South Boston), and yes they did use Volvo cruisers in the late 1970's. Some sort of ski promotion, if I remember correctly.
