Use the SEARCH and read ALL of the posts on FL and CA, only you can decide where it would be best to work for you.

Both states are pretty busy, depending on which department you go for. The weather is nice in both places, although I believe Southern California might be a tad better. We don't have humidity, it doesn't rain from May to October and it doesn't rain too much during the winter. Either state, the weather is better than in New England. We also don't have mosquitos out west!

The pay is much higher out west, but real estate is higher out here too. Although from what I understand it's getting expensive in Florida too. I believe you'd probably get more land in Florida than you would here in Southern California.

You'd probably need to learn some Spanish for both states. The plane ride from New England to Florida is shorter than it is to California, plus you're in the same time zone there. We're three hours behind you.

Guess it all depends on what you're looking for. If you have specific questions, I can answer them for California. As you know, there are several folks on here who are in Florida who can answer your questions regarding that state.

TMS,

I've never worked in California, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone on this board who has worked in both places, so I guess it's a matter of personal preference. If you are interested in working in Florida and have questions, feel free to PM me.

It really depends on what your looking for. As my distingushed colleague from the west pointed out, both areas are busy and offer warm weather. I choose FLA for the close proximate to MA. I had visited the state many times and really enjoyed my visits. The year I decided to move to FL, MA had recieved 100+ inches of snow that winter and I decided I didn't want to shovel ever again. Also many friends and family live or visit FL on a regular basis.

The cost of living was much lower when I moved here 7 years ago, however it has gone up, but I don't believe it's quite as high as S CA.

We have very little rain between Nov and April, but the summer months are the rainy season and it rains for short periods almost daily.

We do have humidity but we do not have SMOG

It's really what you make of it and what your looking for!! One is not better than the other for everyone, it's really a personal preference.

Some people love FL and some hate it, I'm sure it's the same in CA.

Oh yah, I forgot about the smog! We do have a bit of that out here, although it's not as bad as it used to be.

Guess the rainy season is opposite from California to Florida. We get zero rain in the summer but some in the winter.. but it's better than snow!

And very true, the plane trip to Florida is shorter than the trip to California.

Guess that means do your homework, pick a department in whichever state you like and go for it! Myself, Pearl and PBC all did it!

You could move here to sometimes sunny Mississippi.

We have mosquitoes, racial intolerance, lots and lots of humidity, very hot summers, very hot winters, low pay, long hours, no police union, and every so often we attract large hurricanes. We lead the nation in teenage unwed mothers, high school drop outs, and overweight citizens.

This might seal the deal...SOME of our police agencies actually pay MINIMUM WAGE. Want me to send you a brochure?

One Thing I Noticed About Working In Florida Is That I've Met More People Who Came From Mass And New York Than I've Met Florida Natives. Its A Very Transient State But So Far I Love It. I Have Just A Few Weeks Left In The Academy And I Can't Wait To Hit The Street. Just Make Sure You Reserch All Your Departments. Ask Pbc And Pearl They Have Been Down Here Much Longer, I"m Still A Florida Newbie
