SPRINGFIELD/EAST LONGMEADOW, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) - Two men are in custody after shots were fired from one car into another--one that contained an off duty Springfield police officer and his family.
The incident happened in the area of Webber and Eleanor Streets in Springfield. The two vehicles then proceeded into East Longmeadow where more shots were fired on North Main Street. The car with the gunmen was stopped at Manchester Terrace and Stafford Street in Springfield.
Springfield Police Lieutenant John Slepchuk said that 24-year-old Louis Saccamando of Agawam and 25-year-old Frank D'Agostino of Springfield have been arrested. Lt. Slepchuk said the pair is facing a number of charges including assault with intent to murder.
The off duty officer was not injured.
SPRINGFIELD - A Hampden Superior Court grand jury has indicted two men arrested for shooting at the car driven by an off-duty Springfield police officer who had his wife and nephew as passengers.
Frank N. D'Agostino, 23, and Louis Saccamando, 24, both of Springfield, were indicted Wednesday on 11 charges. No arraignment date has been set.
They were indicted on three counts of armed assault with intent to murder and three counts of assault by means of a dangerous weapon. The named victims were Police Officer Alexandros Lalos, his wife, Cherish, and his nephew Francesco Rovelli.
The indictments say the crimes occurred in Springfield and/or East Longmeadow on March 17.
Saccamando and D'Agostino were also indicted for two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count each of unlawful possession of a large capacity weapon, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm and possession of ammunition without a firearms identification card.
In his statement to police on March 17, Lalos said he was taking his nephew, Rovelli, to the hospital for injuries suffered when two men assaulted him in the parking lot of Best Fitness on Allen Street.
According to statements made to police, when Rovelli recognized the car he believed belonged to the men who assaulted him earlier, Lalos began following the vehicle to get a license plate number. While pursuing the vehicle in the Forest Park neighborhood shots were fire at the officer's car.
Rovelli, in a statement made to police, said he believed D'Agostino and Saccamando assaulted him because they are associates of Giuseppe Manzi, of Springfield. He said he had a dispute with Manzi over the quality of marijuana he was selling him.
Through his lawyer, Manzi has denied any involvement in drugs or a feud with Rovelli. Manzi has not been charged with any crime.
Rovelli himself is facing charges in connection with the incident. An assistant district attorney suggested that the arson of Manzi's Audubon Street home on March 18 was in retaliation for the gun play.
Manzi and two other occupants escaped the blaze without injury.
Rovelli, 17, Kevin Hutchinson, 21, and Nicholas Battista, 19, all of Springfield, have been charged with one count of arson and three counts of armed assault with intent to murder in District Court.
Hutchinson told police that he hurled a Molotov cocktail through the house window. "The whole incident started with a beef between my friend Frankie Rovelli and Joe Manzi. . . . Frankie felt that Joe had been ripping him off on the quantity of pot, and supposedly owed Joe something like $1,200," Hutchinson told investigators.
