BOSTON (AP) ― The Massachusetts Bankers Association is warning consumers about another data breach involving a major retailer.
The association said Monday about a third of its 200 member banks have been contacted by Visa and MasterCard. The alerts advised that some of the credit and debit cards the banks issued could be at risk.
Credit card companies haven't named the retailer in the breach, which is believed to affect consumers in Massachusetts and northern New England states.
MasterCard said in a statement it could not name the retailer because the breach is the subject of an ongoing investigation by law enforcement. The bankers association says the breach reportedly occurred from Dec. 7 to March 10.

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Hannaford Bros. supermarket chain announced Monday a security breach that led to thefts of customer credit and debit card numbers.
Officials said the breach has been contained.
Hannaford says the security breach affects all of its 165 stores in the Northeast, 106 Sweetbay stores in Florida and a smaller number of independent groceries that sell Hannaford products. The company puts the number of unique credit and debit card numbers that were potentially exposed to fraud at 4.2 million.
The company is currently aware of about 1,800 cases of reported fraud related to the security breach.
Ronald Hodge, Hannaford president and CEO, says the company has "taken aggressive steps to augment our network security capabilities" since unusual credit card activity came to light on Feb. 27.
The Maine-based company says credit and debit card numbers were stolen during the card authorization transmission process but no personal information, such as names or addresses, was divulged.
The dates of the breach happened between Dec. 7, 2007 to March 10, 2008.
Hannaford is advising customers to take the following steps:
Customers should carefully review their financial institution and credit card statements, and immediately contact their credit card company or issuing bank with any questions or concerns about individual charges.
Customers with questions may call Hannaford's customer assistance line at 866-591-4580.

Illicit software on supermarket servers blamed in breach
PORTLAND, Maine -- Unauthorized software that was secretly installed on servers in Hannaford Bros. supermarkets enabled the massive data breach that compromised up to 4.2 million credit and debit cards. The Maine-based company is confirming a report in The Boston Globe that it told Massachusetts regulators this week about the link. The company doesn't know how the malware -- short for malicious software -- got onto nearly all its 271 stores' servers. A Hannaford spokeswoman says at least 1,800 cases of fraud have been linked to the data breach, with unauthorized charges showing up as far afield as Mexico, Italy and Bulgaria. The breach has prompted concern in the industry because it appeared to be the first large-scale theft of credit and debit card numbers while the information was in transit. The usual mode of attack targets data sitting in databases.
