Syracuse University invites applications for the position of Associate Director of Public Safety. Founded in 1870, Syracuse University is an independent, privately endowed university in an urban setting and with an international reputation, conferring bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees through eleven schools and colleges. Students from all 50 states and over 90 countries make up the approximately 20,000 undergraduates and graduates. The campus consists of 261 buildings on 960 acres and is situated on a hill overlooking the downtown area of Syracuse. The institution employs about 800 faculty and over 3,000 staff. Nearly half of all students live in university housing while the majority of other students live off campus in adjacent neighborhoods, leased housing, or Greek-affiliated properties. The 50,000 seat Carrier Dome is the site of sporting events, commencement, and other large special events.

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, the Associate Director serves as second in command and is responsible for planning and directing the operational and financial aspects of the largest division of the department. The Associate Director will manage patrol, criminal investigations, crime prevention, community relations, special events, recruitment and training, and student safety services. The department is in the process of obtaining campus peace officer, or sworn, status under New York State law. The Associate Director works closely with a variety of campus constituents to develop and implement programs and services related to the welfare and safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors, the protection of university property, and the prevention of crime.

The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree, demonstrated progressive experience in law enforcement and community policing, efficient skills in public speaking and problem solving, and administrative experience including staff supervision, hiring and performance improvement, staff training and development, policy development, and budget management. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of and experience with current issues in law enforcement, public safety, and campus life, as well as a vision for the use of technology as part of an integrated crime prevention and security program. Completion of prior police academy training and the ability to acquire New York State campus peace officer certification is required. Experience in a college or university setting and advanced training or certification in additional safety prevention areas, particularly involving access/control technology, are preferred.

To ensure full consideration, applications should be received by April 20, 2005. A resume with an accompanying cover letter, or a nomination of an individual for this position, may be submitted by e-mail attachment to apply@spelmanandjohnson.com.
