A crackdown on public order offences, street drinking and drink driving, unprecedented in the history of the State, is under way this weekend as gardai gear up for tomorrow's St Patrick's day festivities.
The full force of the law is being brought to bear in garda divisions across the nation in a concerted drive to clamp down on out-of-control revellers.
Officers in Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Galway, Waterford and Sligo and numerous towns across Ireland will take to the streets with strict instructions to aggressively pursue anyone found in possession of alcohol outside a legally licensed premises.
Nobody involved in any incident in any pub, club or other venue will be beyond the reach of the law either, with gardai empowered to enter any premises where trouble flares up.
High-visibility patrols in public places, at bus stops, outside fast food outlets and other late night venues -- aimed at discouraging potential trouble makers -- will begin tonight and continue until the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The patrols, which will be backed up by 800 reinforcement gardai in Dublin alone, are just one key element of the force's determined effort to avoid any repeat of St Patrick's Day 2004, where the celebrations descended into wanton displays of violence across the country.
Drivers will also come in for intense scrutiny, with gardai mounting their biggest ever anti-drink and speeding campaign.
For the first time, the Mandatory Alcohol Testing (MATs) programme is being used throughout the State to snare those who get behind the wheel after drinking.
Yesterday, all the early signs appeared to suggest the operation was having the desired effect, with just seven drivers out of 2,400 tested on Friday night found to be over the legal blood alcohol limit.
By Tuesday morning, the gardai will have conducted no fewer than 8,000 breath tests.
