FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ) ― Police and FBI officials said computer hackers breached Framingham State College's e-mail system and randomly sent threatening messages to people across the country.

While it's unknown exactly how many people received the threatening e-mails, police said the messages demanded money.

The e-mails read in part, "Now do you want to LIVE OR DIE? As someone has paid us to kill you. Get back to me now if you are ready to pay some fees to spare your life, $15,000 is all you need to spend."

The breach was discovered last weekend and was mostly fixed by Monday, school officials said, though some students lost access to their individual e-mail accounts for a time. Police said the hackers breached about 30 campus accounts.

Officials said they don't believe the system was hacked into from within the school, adding that they traced the hacker's IP address to China, Russia and Sudan.

School officials said security had been added and staff and students were asked to strengthen their passwords.
