Window tint exemptions??

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Recently I observed a truck with blacked out windows all around. The truck was advertising window tinting.

I see alot vehicles driving around with very dark window tints. Does Mass law provide any exceptions allowing someone to tint thier front windows extremely dark?

Can the installer of such as well as the operator be gigged??

Read Chapter 90 section D.

I am a gun dealer, so I rountinely show off my products by pointing them at random people...I don't see why the tint guy should be gigged.

Sorry wordstew, couldn't help myself.

Pointing a gun at random people is going to possibly get you shot if you point it at the wrong person. As for the window tint, having dark tint is a major safety problem for law enforcement when we approach a vehicle. Mass has made the law very specific for that reason, a $250.00 reason

Sorry if you misunderstood my sarcasm, I am not really a gun dealer and I do not randomly point guns at anyone! I thought it was fairly obvious that a tint company is not exempt from being fined for having excessive tint.

Sticktime I think you should do a little thinking before you post comments or threads.

On a related note, what's the process in getting one of those fake screen names?

I don't have paypal and don't feel like getting a money order for 50 cents. Do you sell them in bulk?

Don't fall for Sniper's scam....your very own fake screen name is but a free Yahoo mail account away.

Would i be ticketed for 30% tint? I understand the law is 35% and it's for the officer's safety. If i'm pulled over, i will roll down all my windows to allow as much light in as possible so the officer will feel more comfortable.

Just wondering if 30% is not enough to justify a ticket, like going 60 mph in a 55 zone.

Given that the 2nd to last paragraph of the law states, "No person shall manufacture, sell, offer for sale or trade, equip or operate a motor vehicle in the commonwealth in violation of the provisions of this section..."

If you could find out who the installer was could you gigg them as well? Do you think it would stick, or by "equip" are they referring to the operator/owner of the vehicle?

I know this is way out there but ya know, just wondering if the guy really copped an attitude on you.

Could you be? Yes. Would you be?

*shrug*

You'd have to ask the officer that pulls you over.

To get back to the thread for a moment..this might help.

Massachusetts Window Tint Law

Massachusetts Tint Law Enacted: 1985
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN MASSACHUSETTS?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Massachusetts, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
WindshieldNon-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield. Front Side WindowsMust allow more than 35% of light in.Back Side WindowsMust allow more than 35% of light in.Rear WindowMust allow more than 35% of light in. HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN MASSACHUSETTS?

Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.
Front Side WindowsMust not be more than 35% reflective.Back Side WindowsMust not be more than 35% reflective. OTHER MASSACHUSETTS RULES AND REGULATIONS
Restricted ColorsNo colors of tint are explicitly banned. Side MirrorsDual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted. Certificate RequirementsManufacturers of film do NOT need to certify the film they sell in the state. Sticker RequirementsState law recommends but does not require stickers to identify legal tinting. Medical ExemptionState allows medical exemptions for special tint. For more details about the specific terms of the exemption, consult your state law. This is in Mass though...not sure of other states.
