FRAMINGHAM —
A Framingham man claimed he was "a new breed of gangster" and challenged officers to a fight on Monday after he was arrested for attacking his girlfriend, police said.
Javier Febus, 32, told his girlfriend and her mother he would kill them if they called the police, and then told officers he was a member of the Nata Gang, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.
Officers went to 786 Waverley St. for a report of an assault at 8:41 p.m.. They were greeted outside by the victim, a 32-year-old woman whom police did not identify.
She said she was in the apartment talking with her mother about an accident she had been involved in. Febus, she said, was drunk and kept interrupting the conversation, so she told him to leave.
"He went into the kitchen and grabbed a metal pot cover," said Shastany. "He began to approach his girlfriend and her mother, got in between them and he threw the cover and it hit her (the girlfriend) in the side of the head."
The woman was left with a red and swollen ear.
Police found Febus a few blocks away and arrested him. Police say Febus flashed several gang signs at officers and showed what he said were gang tattoos.
At the station, police say Febus kicked and punched the holding cell door, and Officer Ken Blass told him to stop or he would be restrained.
"Febus said, 'Bring it on. I'm the new breed of gangster. Let's go. I'm ready for you,' " said Shastany.
Police say Febus punched Blass before he was handcuffed.
Febus, of 786 Waverley St., was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, disturbing the peace, intimidating a witness and making domestic threats.
Febus pleaded not guilty in Framingham District Court yesterday and was released without bail. He is due back in court on April 8 for a pretrial conference.
