FRAMINGHAM — A Framingham man was arrested Monday and charged with his fourth drunken driving offense after police said his pickup truck hit a parked car on Nicholas Road. Paul J. Lach, 59, was arrested at 4:50 p.m. after his Dodge Ram pickup struck a Honda CRV sport utility vehicle in the parking lot of Ace Hardware on Nicholas Road, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said. Police said a woman called authorities because she said the man in the pickup truck appeared to be trying to drive away and looked as if he was drinking. She told officers she was leaving the store when she saw the pickup tap the Honda and start to pull away. "She yelled, 'Hey, stop,' and he got out of the truck and he was unsteady and he was slurring," Shastany said. "He kept saying, 'I have to go home and cook my daughter dinner.' " The officers spoke to Lach, who was standing near his truck with the smell of alcohol on his breath and his glasses sitting askew on his face, police said. "He admitted he had a couple of drinks earlier," said Shastany. "He said he wasn't going to leave. He said he had hit the car and he guessed the person inside was upset. The officers told him the car was unoccupied, and he was shocked." After failing several road-side sobriety tests, Lach was arrested. Lach, of 19 Linda Ave., was charged with driving under the influence of liquor, fourth offense. According to Lach's criminal history report, he was convicted of operating a vehicle under the influence in Springfield in 1996, and in Boston in 1994 and 1993. Lach pleaded not guilty at his Framingham District Court arraignment yesterday and was released on $1,000 bail. He is due back in court on April 7 for a pretrial conference.
