NEW BEDFORD — A pizza delivery driver fought off two men who tried to rob him at knifepoint while he made a delivery Monday night in the North End, police reported.
Police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey P. Silva said the driver went to a Summer Street residence just before 10:30 p.m. to deliver a pizza, but was told by a resident there that no one had ordered one.
While the driver was still outside, a man wearing a black ski mask and a blue-hooded sweasthirt walked up to him and claimed the order was his girlfriend's. The driver felt he was in danger and threw the pizza back inside his vehicle, police reported.
The unidentified man approached the driver, punched him in the face and brandished a large double-edged knife, police reported.
Instead of fleeing, the driver took out a folded pocket knife and threatened to cut his would-be assailant, Lt. Silva said.
At that point, a second male suspect wearing a ski mask emerged and tried to subdue the driver from behind.
The driver still resisted, and after a brief stalemate, the two suspects took off running in the direction of the Presidential Heights housing project, Lt. Silva said.
At the Summer Street residence, a woman told police that a Chinese food delivery driver had earlier gone to the house that night, but that no one there had ordered Chinese, police reported.
The resident also said she saw a "shady-looking" man wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt who was walking around the house at the time the Chinese food delivery driver arrived. Police did not receive a report of a Chinese food driver being robbed Monday night, Lt. Silva said.
Detectives are investigating the incident.
