NEW BEDFORD — A man armed with a silver handgun robbed the First Citizens' Bank branch at 1341 Cove Road Monday, police reported. A bank teller told police she saw the suspect donning a ski mask and standing outside the branch about 20 minutes before the robbery, which was reported at 9:39 a.m. The teller told police she instructed the other bank employees to hide their large bills, but said she did not immediately call police because she did not feel threatened, police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey P. Silva said. The suspect was described as a white man between 40 and 50 years of age, approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall, wearing blue jeans, boots, a black hooded jacket and blue gloves. After walking inside the bank, the suspect first asked a teller for money, but she refused, Lt. Silva said. The suspect went to the next teller, pulled out a silver handgun, and demanded money. He walked back to the first teller, and while waving his gun in the air, said: "Now give me your money," according to police reports. The suspect ran out of the bank with an undisclosed sum. Police couldn't find him. Lt. Silva said it is possible the suspect may have gone to a nearby Rite Aid pharmacy because he dropped a white Rite Aid bag inside the bank's foyer. Detectives are investigating. Lt. Silva urged anyone with information about the robbery to call the New police anonymous tip line, (50 961-4584, or e-mail or text-message the department at tip@newbedford.ma.gov.
