Routine vehicle stop results in drug arrest

SPRINGFIELD - A routine traffic stop on Liberty Street yesterday morning resulted in an arrest for drug trafficking after state police discovered that the driver had more than 100 grams of cocaine in his coat pocket, police said.
State police charged Angelo DeJesus, 30, of 10 Chestnut St. with trafficking cocaine in between 100 and 200 grams, conspiracy to violate drug laws, and violation of a drug-free school zone.
Police also charged him with driving without a license, driving a vehicle with an expired inspection sticker, and improper passing in a no-passing zone.
State Trooper Christopher S. Keyes of the Armory Street barracks said he spotted DeJesus driving a minivan with an expired sticker.
Keyes said he began tailing the van, and was preparing to pull it over when it crossed a double median line to pass another car on Liberty Street.
When he was able to get the van to stop, Keyes found that DeJesus did not have a license and that the van was not registered.
DeJesus was placed in custody. During a pat-down search, Keyes said, he felt a solid object in his jacket pocket.
The object turned out to a plastic sandwich bag containing more than 100 grams of cocaine, or about 3.5 ounces, Keyes said.
DeJesus was also found to be carrying $464 in cash.
A state police drug-sniffing dog was called in to search the car, but no other narcotics were found.
The four passengers in the vehicle were not charged, and were released.
The van was towed to the Armory Street barracks, where it was due to be returned to the owner, who apparently lent it to DeJesus, said Keyes.
