A seven-year-old boy who was knocked down and killed by an unmarked garda car was crossing the road with his older brother, it has emerged.
Dean Ward died after he was hit by the car near the Clearwater shopping centre in Finglas, north Dublin on Saturday.
It is understood that Dean, from Carrigallen Drive in Finglas, was out with his older brother Gary (9) when the accident happened.
The young brothers were crossing the main N2 road, having reached the central embankment, before preparing to cross the city-bound lanes of traffic. When Dean went to cross the road, his brother attempted to stop him by grabbing his clothes, but to no avail.
The seven-year-old was hit by an unmarked garda car with three plain-clothes gardai inside.
Neighbours said that the two brothers were "inseparable". The dead child was in senior infants in St Oliver Plunkett's primary school.
It is believed that Gary told his older sister that he tried to wake Dean after the crash but was unable to.
Dean suffered severe injuries during the crash and was rushed to Temple Street Children's hospital for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead about an hour after the crash.
The Ward family are understood to be too upset to talk about the Saturday's tragic crash but neighbours yesterday described Dean as "a real lad", who was "about the size of a three-year-old".
"They used to call him 'turboboots' around here," one neighbour said. "He was so small and he'd be peddling that fast but he wouldn't be going anywhere.
"It's ironic, he wanted to be a policeman. There are elderly people living around here and any time an ambulance or anything came over, he'd be out saying, 'Put on your lights, put on your siren'."
