LIMA, Peru -- Peru police have seized 1.5 tons of cocaine and detained seven Peruvians and four Ecuadoreans on a beach in northern Peru, Interior Minister Luis Alva Castro said Monday. "The drugs have been seized from an international organization attempting to transport drugs from Peru to other continents," Alva Castro said on the Canal N television station. The arrests occurred Friday at Cabeza de Toro beach, in Lambayeque province, some 670 kilometers (415 miles) northeast of Peru's capital, Lima. "The group was armed for war ... with approximately US$11,000 in cash, jewelry, radios, telephones, a series of components for the packaging of the drugs, two vehicles, and two motorcycles," Miguel Hidalgo, director of Peru's drug police, said Monday on Canal N. Police have seized more than five tons of illicit drugs in the first 69 days of 2008, a marked increase over the same period in pervious years, Alva Castro said. He did not detail what other types of drugs have been seized. Peru is the world's second-largest coca and cocaine producer, after Colombia.
