Pawtucket, RI PD Hiring

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Pawtucket RI PD is starting a recruitment drive, apps in March 10-24. I'm a RI native, and Pawtucket is no joke. Some serious drug trafficking and gang problems there, lots of PD action. It is the third largest city in RI, and is legit - it's built up, has a downtown, albeit a small one (similar to springfield/lowell). Their rep with other depts in RI is that their patrolmen can tend to be a bit cowboy, lot of young guys. Just wondering if anyone else has heard this rep. Anyway, seems like a good place to apply.

52k starting pay plus OT/Detail/Longevity up to 10% of base
Benefits
20 year retirement

I would definatly move down there for a job. How are they with hiring people out of state that are willing to move ? Also thier site says you must be 18+ but do they actually hire anyone under 21 ?

Posted by: HELPMe

according to the application packet you make a whopping 15 an hr while in the academy.

Who told you that??????

Posted by: redsox03

They don't mess around. They've killed 3 people in the past 7 months.
I'll move to Pawtucket for a job.

Posted by: Joe333x

me too I just wish that they were hiring after the summer since thats when I'll have 30 credits.

Posted by: GD

If they are hiring, I can guarantee it is for late August!! The spring academy starts March 21st. RI Municipal academy does not run during the summer. If my recollection is correct it starts third or fourth week in August. Hope the info is helpful.

Posted by: Boston664

Generally RI depts don't give a shit if you're from MA, from what I've heard they don't even require state residency. I'm friends with a female PT cop, she's good shit, but the dept def does not fuck around, maybe that's a better way to put it instead of "cowboy", simply put, PT cops have a rep for not taking any bullshit and being hardcore.

Anyone know if they accept the mass academy or would someone have to go again through theirs??

Posted by: samadam78

They won't accept a mass academy 100% they make you go to the academy for some stuff......
Also IF they give you 15/hr in the academy that is GREAT for RI some depts. in RI pay min. wage during the academy....
They are def. hiring for the Aug. academy the spring academy starts in a couple days....

I made an error, the spring academy starts Monday, March 17th.

They also have a very squared away swat unit or special response unit as they call it. For the most part a great department.

Posted by: Boston664

Anyone know if they give a shit about tatts? My friend on the job there has some visible - just don't know to what extent they put up with it.

Posted by: CTrain

Does anyone know how many they are looking to put through the academy in August? It says on the site that they are looking to establish an eligibility list, so they may not even have spots open now... correct?

I went throught process for pawtucket back in 03. Made the top 3 and they sent me to the orientation for the Police Academy. I asked the directer if he accepted laterals form Massachusetts. He said that he had no problem with doing so and he said that he had just done one I think from Rehobeth or one of the R.I/MA border towns. Also in my interview I was told that I would only have to show up certain classes that were R.I specific, obviosuly M/V law and a few other things. I was told that I would sit in the back of the class in court attire or full uniform. Unfortunatley they hired 2 and that was the end of the list. Again I was told this information face to face from the R.I police academy director and the Pawtucket P.D command staff. This was back in 03.

MACOP is a squared away individual. You shouldn't assume that you know something about someone that you have never met.

April 5 is the agility test for those that havent signed up yet.

Posted by: CTrain

I'll be seeing you there then, HELPMe?

Posted by: LikeIt223

After the agility- does anyone know when the academy would start?

Posted by: CTrain

I know that RI has an academy starting in August, however, keep in mind if you apply you are applying to be put on an eligibility list. I didn't see anywhere on the site or in the application packet that they are actualy hiring at this very moment - It simply states that the top candidates will be put on an eligibility list, and when slots open they willed be filled from that list.

Right- I have to go to a wedding out of the country at the end of June. I didn't want to get into a process that I knew I would not be able to finish (if need be!). Thanks for the info.

They usually hire a fair amount each year. I dont know about 07, but they hired 10 in 2006 and I think 9 or 10 in 2005. Better odds then civil circus.

Posted by: redsox03

I went today, the last day to apply. I was the 171st applicant, so I dont think they will even get 200 candidates.

Posted by: LikeIt223

I was there at 1430 (closed at 1500) and the guy in front of me asked about 100 questions. I overheard that he was candidate 195 (worker there approximated) and that rumor was Pawtucket was looking to put on 6 new ptlr. The woman also said something else about the number, but I did not catch it.

Anyways, about 4 more wo/men showed up after me-- I would put the total pool at this point to be just breaking 200. (Assuming her count was accurate)

Good luck.

Posted by: crisco88

I know a few P.O.'s in R.I. and they applied to Pawtucket, which means they will be transfering, no academy for them just a few weeks with a f.t.o.. Always remember the almighty dollar is king!!!!!!!!!!

The department is one of the best in RI. Just remember about 1/2 of the applicants wont be able to pass a BI. The others, will drop out due to offers from other departments etc. So the odds are still fairly good. I am number 400 on a town in mass on the list, so this is still better odds of getting into the process. Good Luck to those that apply.

Posted by: redsox03

OK fess up, who's the guy that showed up in full Air Force PT uniform and failed the run?

Posted by: CTrain

I failed the run, but sure as hell wasn't wearing an Air Force PT uniform haha

Posted by: WaterPistola

what was the run 1.5miles in how much time?

Posted by: nikc12

the youngest groups got 12:29 to finish. i think i did it in 9:40

Posted by: CTrain

I'm too slow haha

But there is a kid at my school who wears his Air Force PT uniform every day...

Posted by: Joe333x

What was the required time and distance ? I have been working out and have my mile down to 7 minutes or under. How long do the majority of departments have you run ? I'm just curious if I should be trying to get my mile faster or start shooting for 2 miles.

Posted by: nikc12

it was 1.5 miles and under 21 had to do it in 12:29.

therefore, with a 7 minute mile you are fine.

Posted by: WaterPistola

what about 21-29? 13:06?

Posted by: HELPMe

^Its 12:29 until you hit age group 30-39 where, it gets bumped up to 12:53. These standards are uniform for every department in RI as, they use the academys physical fitness standards.
