BROCKTON —
Authorities will be pouring through financial records amid allegations that cash is missing from the Hancock Elementary School’s Parent Advisory Council bank account.
“We won’t be able to determine how much money we are talking about or see the depth of it until a financial audit is done,” Police Capt. Emanuel Gomes said.
Police are awaiting bank records from the PAC account to see who cashed checks and where the money went before officially determining whether criminal charges should be lodged
“It takes a little while,” Gomes said.
He said police will be examining several years of financial records — all during the tenure of one individual involved in the PAC — as part of the investigation.
“We are going back to the inception of this individual’s tenure,” he said.
Police were alerted to a potential problem by the school department, and PAC officials were then contacted, he said.
The money is officially PAC cash, not school department funds. PAC officials were contacted and gave police the official access to the financial records, Gomes said.
“They are obviously very concerned,” Gomes said of the PAC members. “They obviously want an investigation done.”
Gomes declined to name who may be under investigation as part of the probe. He said if there is evidence of theft, the district attorney’s office will be notified.
Meanwhile, the treasurer of the Hancock PAC resigned earlier this week as secretary at the school.
Christine Peterson resigned Monday and left the job that day, said Kathleen Sirois, the district's executive director of human resources.
“It was a written resignation,” Sirois said.
Peterson worked in the position since August 2004 and earned about $27,500 annually, Sirois said.
School officials, citing the school department's personnel policy, did not provide any more information on the reason for Peterson's departure.
Peterson has served as treasurer of the Hancock School Parent Advisory Council.
