NATICK — A father and son were hospitalized with knife wounds last night after they fought over a weapon at the older man's Cedar Gardens apartment, police and a witness said. Shirley Price, a resident at the apartments, said she and her neighbor, Dan McElhinney, had just come back from the Natick American Legion when he went to his home and found his son hiding inside with a knife. "He was back within 10 minutes, bloody from head to toe," she said. Price said the son, Dennis McElhinney, 39, tried to stab his 65-year-old father in the eye and heart and slashed his arms and shoulder. The father, who already has one glass eye, cut his hands pulling the knife away and also stabbed his son, Price said. He then ran back back uphill from his home at 38 Cedar Ave. to Price's apartment, she said, and called for her to let him in quickly. Police were called to the apartment complex for seniors and the disabled around 6:30 p.m. State police also were called to the scene later, police Lt. Brian Grassey said. Cedar Gardens resident Donna Martel said she saw two men loaded separately into ambulances. Dan McElhinney was treated and released last night from MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, spokeswoman Beth Donnolly said. No further information was available on the son's condition. Grassey said one person appeared to have been injured worse than the other in the fight, but police were not immediately certain which one. Price said she had spoken by phone with Dan McElhinney and he said his son disputed how the fight started. The son had just moved back to the area from Colorado and has been staying with family members and at a home near St. Patrick's Church, Price said. She said the father is a friend who helped take care of her dog while she was recently in the hospital.
