NEW BEDFORD — A city teenager was sentenced up to five years in state prison after he pleaded guilty Thursday to sexually assaulting a St. Vincent's Group Home counselor last November.
Larry Glasper, 17, pleaded guilty to charges that include assault with intent to rape, indecent assault and battery, and assault and battery on a police officer.
According to police reports, on Nov. 2, Mr. Glasper attempted to rape a 26-year-old female counselor at the group home at 1200 Church St. The victim was the only staff member inside the house and she was assigned to watch Mr. Glasper and a second male teenager.
The second youth called 911 when Mr. Glasper attacked the victim. A New Bedford police officer arrived within minutes and stopped the attack while it was in progress, according to police reports.
The sexual assault marked the second incident in as many weeks — and the third since June 2007— that Mr. Glasper was charged with attacking counselors at the group home.
On Thursday, Superior Court Judge Robert Kane sentenced Mr. Glasper to serve three to five years in state prison.
The judge also imposed five years of probation, warned Mr. Glasper to not contact the victim, and mandated sex offender counseling and GPS monitoring upon his release.
According to court records, Mr. Glasper was in the custody of the Department of Social Services while he lived at the group home. He was placed in the residence in July 2005, a DSS spokeswoman said.
Mr. Glasper was removed from the St. Vincent's Group Home program immediately after the assault.
John Kearns, a spokesman for the Fall River Diocese, which oversees the St. Vincent's program, said officials found no fault with the group home's policies that were in place at the time of the assault.
"In the aftermath of the incident, both St. Vincent's Home and the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Child Care, which licenses St. Vincent's Home, reviewed the incident and found no gaps in procedures or policies nor any instances of procedures that should be changed," Mr. Kearns said.
The Church Street residence is one of three group homes the St. Vincent's program maintains in New Bedford. Three other homes are in Fall River.
The homes are for troubled youths, who receive counseling, meet with social workers and receive educational assistance while attending school.
On Oct. 25, a week before the sex assault, Mr. Glasper was charged with shoving the same female counselor to the ground and punching a male counselor in the head.
He was issued a court summons to face two counts of assault and battery.
In June, Mr. Glasper was arraigned on assault and battery charges after a man said the defendant punched him in the mouth while they were in the group home.
The case was later dismissed.
