NASHUA, N.H. -- A teenager from Massachusetts was charged with assault after his girlfriend was shot in the hand in Nashua Wednesday night, police said.
Jeremy Menendez, 18, of Lynn, Mass., was charged with domestic violence assault. Police said he recklessly handled a gun and shot his girlfriend in the hand.
"The bullet fragmented and broke part of her finger," said Dorothy Dion, Menendez's girlfriend's sister. "She had to have surgery to remove part of her middle finger."
Dion said her sister was still in the hospital but expected to be released Thursday afternoon.
Police said the woman initially told police she was shot outside her apartment on Brook Village Road by someone she didn't know. But Menendez later told police that the gun went off in his girlfriend's bedroom while he was trying to unload it.
Dion said she was thankful no one else was hurt.
"I'm just grateful it wasn't my nieces or nephews," she said. "She does have five kids in the house where she was shot. I'm just grateful it wasn't one of them."
Menedez was also charged with possession of marijuana and charged with assault in connection with a Dec. 19 incident. Police said he punched a 15-year-old student outside Nashua South High School. The 15-year-old suffered bruises, cuts to his head and a broken tooth, police said.
Menendez told the judge that he has only lived in Lynn for six months. Ruling that Menendez is a flight risk, the judge set bail at $10,000 cash or surety. Menendez is due back in court on March 12 for a probable cause hearing.
