Homeland Security grant, drug money being used to pay for new additions

QUINCY —
A pipe bomb, a lost child and a bag of heroin smell absolutely nothing alike.
But good luck trying to find any of them with your nose alone.
That, however, is exactly what six new police dogs will be trained to do when they join the Quincy Police Department in the coming weeks. The department is reviving a police dog division that languished for years.
The department will receive a $220,000 federal Homeland Security grant to buy and train four dogs to detect bombs and firearms. The money will also pay for four Ford Expeditions for the dogs, said Lt. Robert Gillan, who has pursued the grant since 2003.
Gillan said the department already bought two other dogs, German shepherds named Bruno and Shaggi, which will begin training next week to specialize in drug detection. He credited Mayor Thomas Koch for those new dogs, saying Koch instructed that they be bought and trained using seized drug money. Cracking down on drug crime was a central issue in Koch’s campaign last year, and Koch vowed to add to the department’s K-9 division.
All six dogs will also be trained to track crime suspects and missing people.
Until recently, Quincy relied heavily on dogs from the State Police and the Boston, Weymouth, Milton and Braintree departments. Gillan said the other departments were cooperative in sharing the dogs, but response times were inevitably longer.
“You get a cold trail,” he said. “You want to catch the bad guys quickly or find that missing child. Time is critical.”
Gillan said the department intends to buy all of the dogs from a Connecticut company that imports them from breeders in the Czech Republic and Belgium. He said he sees them being used most frequently to track robbery suspects, missing children and elderly citizens who wander away from home.
The dogs also will conduct bomb sweeps at the city’s MBTA stations and ferry terminal, and sniff out concealed weapons at crowded events like the annual Christmas parade, Gillan said.

Great news for QPD. Our 1 dog makes a huge impact simply by showing up. It's always amusing to watch some turd's pucker factor go up when the dog finally arrives after believing it was a bluff to call him out in the first place. QPD guys/gals deserved something postive to come thier way for a change.

Looks like Koch might be a good friend of the QPD. He is certainly off to a good start, let's hope it stays that way.

These dogs(Bomb detection) are supposed to be Belgian Malinois', are there any K9 officers out there that can let me know about how these dogs are with other dogs and kids? I have read on web sites that they are "usually" good with kids and other dogs, but I wanted to hear from people who actually have K9 Malinois'.

My Mal is great with the wife, kid, dog and cat. However, we have some other Mals on the K9 unit that want to kill everything they see. It totally depends on the individual dog. They are all, however, very high drive and high speed dogs. Even more so than the GSDs.

These gun dogs are high maintenance.

They only eat when they find something.

I don't think they can be trained for anything else.

Ours has the stipulation that if the Feds ever need dogs for whatever reason, off you and the dog go.

Good to hear.

I'm surprised that the dogs are being crossed trained in tracking, drug detection, and bomb detection.

I know many trainers believe that a patrol dog should focus solely on tracking and criminal apprehension, while a detection dog of any type should be trained to seek only one item; whether it is drugs, bombs, etc.

Only two of the 6 will be trained in Drugs and the rest will be trained in bomb detection. They will all go to patrol school.
