ASHLAND —
Town officials last night appointed a former Milford Police officer and promoted two firefighters to fill vacancies in both departments.
Under a recommendation from Police Chief Scott Rohmer, Town Manager John Petrin appointed Officer Edward Pomponio.
Pomponio, an 18-year veteran cop, resigned from the force in Milford in June 2005 after he was accused of having sex with another man's wife while on duty. At the time, Milford Police Chief Thomas O'Loughlin said he would have fired Pomponio had he not stepped down before a disciplinary hearing.
Petrin last night acknowledged Pomponio had not worked in law enforcement for about two years, but said he wants to re-enter the field. Petrin stressed that town officials had completely reviewed Pomponio's background.
"Basically, the bottom line is we bring an experienced person to the department. ... We've reviewed all the circumstances and we're fully satisfied with our complete investigation," Petrin said.
Pomponio attended last night's meeting with his wife. He thanked town officials, but did not speak publicly after his appointment.
Rohmer detailed Pomponio's record, including five years active duty as a Marine, earning a good conduct medal. He holds a master's degree in criminal justice, and among many other skills, Rohmer said he is recognized as an expert in fingerprint evidence.
Pomponio also has experience in everything from a major kidnapping case to establishing community policing programs in the schools, and has been commended by the state Legislature for his service, Rohmer said.
The chief also said Pomponio had been able to overcome adversity.
"He stands ready to be an experienced resource and an immediate positive contributor to the town of Ashland and the Ashland Police Department," Rohmer said.
Selectmen voted unanimously to waive a 15-day waiting period to make final Petrin's appointment of Pomponio.
With many firefighters in the audience, fire Chief William Kee also promoted Lt. Scott Boothby to acting captain, and firefighter Lyn Monaghan to acting lieutenant.
Kee said the promotions are "bittersweet," as they were prompted by the upcoming retirement of longtime Capt. Michael Brogan.
Boothby has been with the department since 1987 and an officer for 12 years, Kee said. He is a training officer and coordinator for the district technical rescue team, and he recently completed a degree in fire science, Kee said.
Monaghan, firefighter/paramedic since 1997, shares many of the same certifications and is a member of the same rescue team. She also is certified as a search team, working with a rescue dog, Kee said.
Family members pinned new badges on both firefighters.
In a night filled with new appointments, Petrin also permanently appointed Robert Morini as the town's building inspector. Morini has been interim inspector since his predecessor, Robert Hill, died last October.
