Harry Solomon in Lowell is very small, 9 State beds there, 24 up stairs run by Westwood Lodge for kids and teenagers. I go up there once a week for work related duties, haven't seen the DMH Officer there at times, I thought he was watching a patient or something. Either way its a small facility, worth applying to as any police job is. Also emergency psych services since lowell hospital ERs do not have psych wards.

Didn't it used to be a lot bigger? Or am I confusing that with another facility with "Solomon" in the name?

There are 2 DMH Facilites with the name solomon in them:

-The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Community Mental Health Center (one name, I thought at one time it was named after 3 different people) named after the first black psychiatrist. Which is located in Boston

-The Dr. Harry C. Solomon Community Mental Health Center in Lowell.
named after the commissioner of the DMH in the 60s who helped to change the way mentally ill are dealt with. Things like out patient services, community mental health services, etc. Basically no more hugh mental hospital to lock up people for life at.

Its very confusing how the state facilites are run. Basically who an actually state employee is.

In the community mental health centers (at least in lowell) the only state employees are:

-DMH Police
-DMH Case Managers/Admin.
-DMH Maintenance

Everyone else is contracted out to private companies. Certain facilities have state nurses and doctors, a lot are affiliated with UMass Medical School.

It used to be larger...it was the psych facility for the area, then came the funding cuts for mental health facilities...now the psych patients live in the ER's for a week or so until a bed can be located for them...

Lowell usually has 1 officer on, sometimes I see 2. Lowell has whats called "crisis beds" used for people who are coming out of a psych hospital setting or are going into a psych hospital setting. The goal is supposed to keep them from ending up in a psych hospital. In my opinion crisis beds are waiting beds.

Upstairs is a childrens and adolescent unit leased out to a private company, however the DMH Police do respond up there at times. On top of it there are partial hospital programs (basically daily group therapy and activities, etc.). Also the traveling crisis team and emergency psych services are stationed there.

Definately true. The DMH handles forensic cases and long term cases involving people who are severely mentally ill. You can't just drive up to a state hospital and get admitted.

For the most part its very sad when you can't get someone a state bed who needs the long term care (beyond one month is considered long term). A lot of the severely mentally ill end up becoming forensic before they get any real services, besides the "revolving door" of hospital stays. There have been patients who have waited for 6 months to get a state bed while in a private psych hospital.

They end up being #1 on the list for months. Community mental health and fully pro-active mental health systems are needed. Also post discharge care may save the trauma of being hospitialized again and again.

I've seen patients who have been the biggest jerks in the world when they first come in, once the they find the right meds for the patient, that patient can be the nicest guy in the world. Its a shame because he or she has no where to go when they are discharged to the homeless shelter because they really don't need the half-way houses (or have no beds). With in a few months they will miss an appointment, or not adjust to live with out psychosis (similar to how an addict quits drinking, then relapses because they can't live with out that feeling) stop taking their meds and end up back at the hospital again and again. Most of the frequent flyer mentally ill people are like this and have had messed up lives that you read about. However, a good portion of the mentally ill turn out fine and are in the hospital for about a week to 2 weeks. I'm not even going to talk about dual diagnosis patients (patients with mental illness and substance abuse problems)

It is a joke because the State Hospitals, some like Medfield (now closed) have buildings built in the last 20 years that need min. maintence and could be used for "assisted living" for people who are mentally ill that aren't ill enough for a half-way house, but lack community support. What it comes down to is $. Psych stuff can't be measured with tests you would get during a heart attack. Insurance companies don't want to pay as much. Its not a money maker by any means. The lack of available service are astounding (especially for children/adolescents). Lowell General hospital used to have a psych unit, there isn't any $ in it thats why.

Based on pictures I've seen taken in the last year or so, Medfield State Hospital is still in pretty decent shape and seems to be maintained. Hopefully the state learned their lesson with the old Kirkbride facilities like Danvers where they shut off the heat & electricity to save money and the buildings quickly deteriorated.
