TIJUANA, Mexico -- Suspected drug gang members were involved with a shootout between Mexican police and soldiers in Tijuana, according to Reuters News Service. The five-hour gun battle, which began Sunday night and went on until early Monday morning, took place in a residential neighborhood near the U.S-Mexico border, the report said. One Mexican police officer and one of the alleged gang members were killed, according to Reuters. According to Reuters, Mexican President Felipe Calderon ordered thousands of troops and federal police to Tijuana and other cities in Baja California. Mexico has seen a spike in gang-related killings since the beginning of the year. The Mexican government has described the violence as revenge for Calderon's year-old crackdown on organized crime that sent thousands of soldiers and federal police into violence-plagued cities nationwide. More than 2,500 people were killed in drug violence in Mexico last year and more than 300 have died so far this year as cartels smuggling cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana fight each other for control of routes to the United States. The Mexican army has now been called in to replace local police in Mexico's war on drugs, and the U.S. government is trying to help. Officials north of the border said they are concerned that the violence could spill over.
