Chief’s son among 3 new policemen

By Kim Ring TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

EAST BROOKFIELD— After clearing it with the state ethics commission, selectmen last night hired Keith A. Cournoyer, the son of the town’s top cop, as a part-time police officer.

Chief William J. Cournoyer said that like other officers, his son will be directly supervised by Sgt. William C. Gregoire.

“We’re not changing anything,” the chief said. Sgt. Gregoire makes recommendations to the chief about disciplinary actions for officers and the chief said he usually goes along with the sergeant’s decisions.

Still, Sgt. Gregoire said he is “in a tight spot,” because he could find himself having to discipline his boss’ son.

“I’m in a unique spot,” he told selectmen last night. “I don’t even want to talk about it.”

But selectmen said they were confident in the chief’s choices and moved to appoint Mr. Cournoyer, 27, along with police dispatcher Timothy C. Grant, 38, of Sturbridge and Zachary Hubacz, 21, of North Brookfield. The new appointees will be on four months probation and were officially sworn in last night.

All three have attended the police academy for part-time officers. Mr. Cournoyer spent six years in the Air Force and is an Iraqi war veteran with a Purple Heart and several other honors.

Mr. Grant was a Brimfield police officer and is a dispatcher in his hometown. Mr. Hubacz has a college degree in criminal law and is bilingual, the chief said.

The men also bring other skills to the department, including some things that might be useful in their new jobs, though the chief declined to offer specifics.

“Everybody brings some positive to the department as a whole,” he said, adding that the appointments were necessary because some officers have recently left for other jobs.
