Pitman woman hurt when fireworks explode in oven

PITMAN — A 42-year-old borough woman was injured when what authorities called a stash of "homemade fireworks" stored inside her oven exploded
Tracy Shimkus, of West Holly Avenue, suffered injuries to her face, hand and stomach after she allegedly attempted to turn on the stove and it exploded Monday afternoon, police said.
Neighbors said that after the explosion Shimkus left her house, on the north side of the road, crossed the street and collapsed in the front yard of a neighbor's house, who then called 9-1-1 around 2:40 p.m. Monday.
"I saw her laying there, in the yard, and she was bleeding," neighbor Catherine DiSimone said. "The snow was full of blood, and her hand, her hand was bleeding everywhere."
Shimkus was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden. She was listed in critical condition Tuesday but the nursing supervisor on duty said she was improving.
A woman who said she was related to the Shimkuses said Tracy Shimkus was awake and able to talk with her family.
Prosecutors said "homemade fireworks" were the cause of the explosion.
Shimkus has three teenage children, prosecutors said, and lives with her husband, Stephen Shimkus, in a gray three-story home on the 200 block of West Holly Avenue. Shimkus was alone at the time of the explosion, police said.
Police blocked traffic on West Holly Avenue between Walnut and Poplar streets for most of the day Tuesday while they searched the house. Neighbors crowded behind the yellow caution tape to watch as police used a bomb-sniffing dog from the state police to search the home.
"Pitman is such a quiet town," neighbor James Campbell said while watching police at the crime scene. "Look, kids are going home from school, and look what they see. Stuff like this doesn't happen in Pitman."
Officers from the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office and the Pitman Police Department and the New Jersey State Police are involved with the investigation. There were no arrests reported Tuesday night.
