KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
A police officer shot a 52-year-old man armed with a rifle in a home near 34th Street and Flora Avenue early Wednesday morning, police said.
The man was taken to a hospital after being shot twice. His condition is not known. The officer was not hurt.
According to police, a 911 call was received about 1 a.m., saying that a suspicious person was armed with a gun at a home. When police arrived, they found the front door to the home open.
Three officers went inside and were confronted by the man, who was aiming a rifle at the officers, police said.
One officer opened fire, hitting the man. Police do not believe the man fired on the officers. Investigators said it appears the man was suicidal.
"After the shooting, officers of course searched the house. There was no one else was in the house. So it appears he may have called us. We don't know what his intentions were," Officer Darin Snapp said.
The officer who shot the man was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
